Everybody knows about the mule and the liger (thanks ‘Napoleon Dynamite‘), but there are so many more insane combinations that happen both naturally and by human meddling.

Here are 20 strange hybrid breeds you probably didn’t know existed.

20. Grizzly Bear + Polar Bear = Grolar Bear
grolar-bear-tumblr.jpg

This monstrosity is a naturally occurring hybrid of two bear species. Most ursine species can cross-breed, but this one is a recent occurrence for a sad reason. Climate change has been destroying polar bear habitats, forcing them to move further South. There, they meet and mate with grizzly bears. So, I guess this is kind of an indirect man-made species.

19. Male Camel + Female Llama = Cama
Cama-pinterest.jpg

If you know anything about camels or llamas, you probably just cringed at the thought of a male camel, which is about 6 times the size of a llama, breeding with a small female llama. If it makes you feel any better, the size difference is actually impossible to overcome naturally, so these creatures have been created using artificial insemination. The converse combination does not produce offspring.

18. Male Leopard + Female Lion = Leopon
leopon-imgur.png

The thing to remember about these big cat hybrids is that, while they look pretty cool, they usually end up with horrible health problems, and few survive into adulthood. Cancer is common, and they tend to have short, painful lives.

17. Zebra + Donkey = Zonkey
zonkey-tumblr.jpg

Like most hybrid breeds, zonkeys are infertile, and unable to produce offspring. They can happen naturally, when zebras and donkeys are kept in close proximity to each other, or humans can intentionally breed them.

16. Goat + Sheep = Geep
geep-tumblr.jpg

This little fellow is what you get when you mix a goat with a sheep. This combination is very rare because, unlike most creatures on this list that are just different species, goats and sheep belong to different genera as well. Sheep are of the genus Ovis while goats belong to Capra, and because of the chromosomal differences, most geeps are stillborn.

15. Male Jaguar + Female Lion = Jaglion
jaglion.jpg

These two beauties from the Bear Creek Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary in Barrie, Ontario, Canada are sister and brother, and the result of a jaguar and lioness who were raised together taking their relationship to the next level. Jahzara, on the left, inherited her father's melanism gene while her brother Tsunami, on the right, did not.

14. Zebra + Pony = Zony
zony-tumblr.jpg

This adorable little tub-ball is the result of a zebra and a pony breeding. Again, these guys are infertile, and are often used for riding. When bred with the Shetland Pony, the result is called a "Zetland."

13. Pekin Duck + Muscovy Duck = Mulard

Again, the Mulard is one of those hybrids that is unable to produce offspring. This hybrid was created as an alternate food source, including evil foie gras.

12. Male Tiger + Female Lion = Tigon
tigon-pin.jpg

These guys aren't as common as their converse hybrid brethren, the liger, but they have the same slew of health problems.

11. Cow + Yak = Dzo or Dzomo
dzo-wikimedia-commons.jpg

A male combination, referred to as Dzo, is infertile while the female Dzomo is capable of producing offspring. This hybrid is stronger and heartier than yaks, and prized in Mongolia and Tibet for producing more milk and meat than regular cows.

10. Midas Cichlid + Redhead Cichlid = Blood Parrot Cichlid
Pair_of_blood_parrot_cichlids-wikimedia-commons.jpg

These exotic fish hybrids are prized by collectors, but very hard to take care of due to a number of anatomical deformities resulting from the hybridization process. They have a vertical, beak like mouth that they are unable to close, instead crushing food with their throat muscles. They also often have misshapen irises and deformed swim bladders. Many cichlid collectors have called for their boycott, because of how bad their quality of life can be.

9. Zebra + Horse = Zorse
zorse-pinterests.jpg

This is the last of the three main zebroid hybrids. Zorses are sterile, and most commonly the result of a male horse and female zebra. Very rarely, the converse hybrid occurs, as seen here. If a horse with different coloration is bred with a zebra, only the nondepigmented (the not white parts) will have the iconic zebra stripes.

8. European Bison + Cow = Żubroń
Zubron-wikimedia-commons.jpg

The żubroń is the European equivalent of the "beefalo" (cow and buffalo hybrid). Unlike most of the creatures on this list, whose names are portmanteaus of their parents, the żubroń got its name through popular vote. They are preferred to domestic cattle because they are stronger, heartier, disease resistant and bad weather resilient.

7. Male False Killer Whale + Female Bottlenose Dolphin = Wholphin
wholphin-tumblr.jpg

This hybrid of two oceanic dolphin species is extremely rare. They've been reported to exist in the wild, but only one is known to exist for sure. Her name is Kekaimalu, and she's a resident of Hawaii's Sea Life Park. She's had viable offspring with other bottlenose dolphins, though only one has survived into adulthood. This is Kawili Kai, her one- quarter false killer whale, three-quarters bottlenose dolphin daughter.

they are beauties indeed and "tsunami" is the right word for a cat.

this reminds me of the savannah cat, a american cross-breed of the "domestic" cat and generally the serval ( a african cat known for high leaps )...

Savanah Cat is no. 2 on the list .

This cat is so cute . I saw some videos and I am amazed by how similar in nature the cat is to other domestic Cats but far more active and agile than them .

Savanah cat looks like a mini version of Leopard .

. . .
I am struggling to find Difference in nose other than size :undecided:

the ears also... in many photos, savannahs derive the taller, narrower ear from the serval...

f2-savannah-cat_minih1.jpg

but there seems to be a classification of savannahs - f1, f2 and f3... i don't know the details.

There only one animal that is a hybrid of intelligence & stupidity.
