Everybody knows about the mule and the liger (thanks ‘Napoleon Dynamite‘), but there are so many more insane combinations that happen both naturally and by human meddling.
Here are 20 strange hybrid breeds you probably didn’t know existed.
20. Grizzly Bear + Polar Bear = Grolar Bear
This monstrosity is a naturally occurring hybrid of two bear species. Most ursine species can cross-breed, but this one is a recent occurrence for a sad reason. Climate change has been destroying polar bear habitats, forcing them to move further South. There, they meet and mate with grizzly bears. So, I guess this is kind of an indirect man-made species.
19. Male Camel + Female Llama = Cama
If you know anything about camels or llamas, you probably just cringed at the thought of a male camel, which is about 6 times the size of a llama, breeding with a small female llama. If it makes you feel any better, the size difference is actually impossible to overcome naturally, so these creatures have been created using artificial insemination. The converse combination does not produce offspring.
18. Male Leopard + Female Lion = Leopon
The thing to remember about these big cat hybrids is that, while they look pretty cool, they usually end up with horrible health problems, and few survive into adulthood. Cancer is common, and they tend to have short, painful lives.
17. Zebra + Donkey = Zonkey
Like most hybrid breeds, zonkeys are infertile, and unable to produce offspring. They can happen naturally, when zebras and donkeys are kept in close proximity to each other, or humans can intentionally breed them.
16. Goat + Sheep = Geep
This little fellow is what you get when you mix a goat with a sheep. This combination is very rare because, unlike most creatures on this list that are just different species, goats and sheep belong to different genera as well. Sheep are of the genus Ovis while goats belong to Capra, and because of the chromosomal differences, most geeps are stillborn.
15. Male Jaguar + Female Lion = Jaglion
These two beauties from the Bear Creek Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary in Barrie, Ontario, Canada are sister and brother, and the result of a jaguar and lioness who were raised together taking their relationship to the next level. Jahzara, on the left, inherited her father's melanism gene while her brother Tsunami, on the right, did not.
14. Zebra + Pony = Zony
This adorable little tub-ball is the result of a zebra and a pony breeding. Again, these guys are infertile, and are often used for riding. When bred with the Shetland Pony, the result is called a "Zetland."
