PESHAWAR: Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali Thursday said the construction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal has been completed in Karachi that would help increase import of LNG for power generation.
Addressing a press conference here, Abid Sher Ali said government is committed to overcoming the power load shedding at the earliest and efforts are underway to add 1800 Megawatt (MW) of electricity in the national grid before the start of summer season.

He said import of LNG would help meet the demand of power sector and enhance power generation adding that around 80 per cent of gas shortage would also be overcome by next winter.

How much is added to the grid until now by PMLN govt?exclude the nandipur project

^^

I think as soon as they took power they paid the circular debt to increase energy output. I'm not sure how much in MW but i'm sure the load shedding in urban areas decreased from 12 hours in 2013 to 6 hours in 2014. Also most energy projects as part of Pak-China agreement are expected to start construction this year and end in 2018. I see a ray of hope.

There is enough capacity to cope with the current demand. But there a few problems:

1) Losses through the transmission and distribution lines. The infrastructure needs upgrading and also capacity should be added for future growth. Overall stands at 17% I think. This loss will be recovered from the consumer (higher tariff).

2) Charges due to consumers are not collected. I believe there is a large number of people who don't pay any electricity bills which adds to the losses. Again the consumer who pay would have to foot the bill for this too (even higher tariff).

3) The difference between the cost of energy generation and tariff for the consumers. At the moment the Government gives a subsidy to consumers which adds to the circular debt hence it is getting larger by the day. There is only one fix for this (Higher tariff).

So all people will need to pay for the electricity they use.

Losses through transmission and distribution should be less then 5%.
Collection of dues from every consumer.
The government should abandon generation of electricity from furnace oil. This will not happen over night. They can convert the current power plants to run on coal and natural gas. Introduce more hydro power generation. Subsidize solar panels and install them on every roof top (grid tied) plus introduce a feed in tariff for all.

Adding more capacity to the grid would not deal with these fundamental problems. The government should eliminate the root causes first and then look to expand the power generation.

govt doesn't understand one thing, people dont care if they add 50,000 if those plants are not working!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the capacity is already there around 18, 000 more than demand but those run on expensive fuel, govt needs to add coal , hydro, nuclear and wind power

now fall of oil prices will give tremendous breathing space for PML N, the 1800 they claim is probably due to that.

so far they have add nothing.. i dont count the closed nandipur plant..

hell they havent even initiated anything other than previous government final days project of tarbela dam 100% financed by world bank.
and probably the few MWs here anf there in wind and solar

no coal project initiated either in private or public sector after two years, let alone talk of completion..what a performance
