1700 MW thermal power projects to start generation in next 2 years

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15 (SANA): Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf informed the National Assembly on Monday that 1700 megawatt of high proficiency thermal power projects would start generation during the next two years at a cost of 1.5 billion dollars.

Responding to questions in the House he said four IPPs with a capacity of 671 megawatt have also come on the national grid.

The Minister said some rental power projects would also start supplying 1200 megawatt of electricity by June this year, mitigating the current load-shedding.

He informed the House that the government is paying two Rental Power Plants 600 million rupees per month as capacity charges as the government was unable to supply them gas as per agreement signed by the previous government in 2006. Their agreement would expire in June this year.

To another question the Minister said kunda culture contributes to twenty to twenty-five percent of total power thefts in Karachi. Seventy heavily kunda concentrated areas have been identified with over two hundred thousand kundas utilizing a load of about 150 megawatts.

He said plans have been developed to normalize sixty-nine kunda settlements with an estimated forty-five thousand six hundred unmetered connections.

He said bulk metering system, replacement of bare cooper wire with ABC and installation of single phase transformers are being undertaken to tackle the problem of kundas.

The Minister for Water and Power said the government was alive to violation of Indus Water Treaty by India and is resorting to all available options including arbitration. He said the government is taking all remedies provided in the Indus Water Treaty to safeguard its water rights.

He said Pakistan too has initiated several water projects including Neelum Jhelum to safeguard its water rights.

Replying to a question the Minister said that construction work of Diamir-Bhasha Dam will start by the end this year. He said that the biggest power and water project in the country will be complete in eight years at a cost of twelve billion dollars. It will generate 4500 megawatt of electricity after completion at cheapest rates.

Raja Pervez Ashraf said that the government has evolved a short, medium and long-term strategy to overcome the crisis water and power. He said under the strategy, thirty-two small and medium dams in four provinces and FATA will be constructed in two phases.

In the first phase, twelve dams are being constructed which will be completed by 2013 and the second phase will be initiated this year and completed in 2014.

Minister Law and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan informed the House that he has directed his Ministry to write to the relevant authorities to take action against those responsible for investing CDA’s funds in Stock Exchange without out any authority during the previous regime.

He said a sum of 2.3 billion rupees has been invested in the Stock Market and in mutual funds.
