?119 policemen killed in eight months? - DAWN.COM
KARACHI, Sept 3: While the Karachi police chief claimed on Tuesday that the law and order situation was relatively well as compared to the recent past, he said that 119 policemen had been killed during the last eight months.
Speaking at a press conference at the Central Police Office, additional Inspector General Ghuam Qadir Thebo said that the killing of policemen would not deter the police from eliminating the menace of crime with resolve and courage.
He said that the provincial capital was facing problems of street crime, extortion and targeted killings and it was also a fact that a huge quantity of weapons was available in the city. He maintained that just 25,000 policemen for over 20 million people of Karachi were not sufficient.
He said that the police did not want any targeted killing in Karachi.
However, the killing of a few persons in the city of 20 million people was not a big thing, he said, adding that sectarian killings as well as murders due to personal enmities were also witnessed in other parts of the country.
The city police chief conceded that there may be some black sheep in the department.
He said that the police were carrying across-the-board action against criminals to improve the law and order in the metropolis and there was no pressure on them.
Our real target is criminals irrespective of big or small ones but certain people are protecting elements in their respective groups, he said, without naming any specific group.
Highlighting the police performance during the past eight months, he said that 81 alleged extortionists and 461 other suspects involved in murders and other crimes had been arrested.
He said over 4,000 different types of weapons and explosives were also seized from criminals.
He said that 22 alleged kidnappers were also killed in police encounters during the eight-month period.
He said that recently the police arrested a ringleader of a gang of extortionists who got information about possible targets from a woman of an institution. However, he did not name the woman or her organisation.
