What I think is that J-20 would be deployed for point defenses in and around Chinese territory/off shore bases. J-20 is not suppose to go for long range missions as its not a dedicated bomber, not to talk of long range bomber. Mounting external tanks on J-20 will compromise if not completely...

What I know is that Riggers are mainly also the instructors who are involved in the training. Also Riggers pack chutes for BACs (Basic Airborne Courses) but every skydiver of SSG/SSW packs his own chute as they are trained and qualified to do so. May be things have changed with passage of time.
