Tsai Ing-wen 2016: Taiwan Faces the Future

@Nihonjin1051 An excellent video, thanks for posting. Dr. Tsai is most impressive. Some highlights that seemed salient to me: Her discussion of Taiwan's struggle to transition from its status as "factory of the world" and efficiency-driven growth to an innovation-based economy that would...

Japan discovers large quantity of rare earth, hopes to break China’s chokehold on supply

Yes. It is also motivated by the profits it can derive from regulatory rents (e.g. Al Gore and the cap-and-trade scam). Hopefully Japan will not be impeded by its own domestic version.

Japan discovers large quantity of rare earth, hopes to break China’s chokehold on supply

America's greatest enemy when it comes to resource extraction is its environmental lobby. This malevolent lobby has no intention of stopping its consumption of these resources, it just would prefer that China incur the environmental destruction and accompanying pollution.

Look at the bright side. This is a huge upgrade from the "bleeding, amputated limbs" beggar type that I used to see in the '90s.

    Is China a Fascist State?

I agree that China doesn't fit a neat definition of capitalist or communist, but then again, I don't think any country does. China's modern development very closely tracks that of other states that have used "state capitalism" to rapidly industrialize, so I don't see a problem with calling...

    Is China a Fascist State?

Understood. I addressed the question the way I did because that's how Lure directed it, and the finer philosophical details of the nature of socialism are beyond my competence; and I cannot tolerate neo-Nazism, so whole swathes of the conversation are hidden by my ignore list. Otherwise, I...

    Is China a Fascist State?

@Lure OK, here we go. Here is the author's definition of fascism: The author's absurd conflation of fascism with capitalism would qualify nearly every country in the world as fascist to some degree, as capitalism by definition is not democratic and is anti-labor. Is China capitalist? On...

    Is China a Fascist State?

@Lure Great response. I've also been following this thread, and have struggled with the discussion because of the same definitional issues that you highlighted. If the author (or any of the thread participants here) are able to create their own definitions of fascist, socialist, capitalist...

    How many Americans on PDF?

Agreed. If this deal had been wrapped in a grand bargain with Iran to curb its proxies, release the American hostages, and secure Israel, I would have been satisfied--Iran does seem more compatible with us culturally than our Arab "allies," but under the ayatollahs, that can't happen, which is...

    How many Americans on PDF?

I wouldn't go so far as to call them "nuke talks with Iran" as much as "capitulation to Iranian nukes," but yes, I've been following it. I understand why the Europeans, Russians, and Chinese rushed to give nukes to the ayatollahs (they will be repaid with business opportunities), but I have no...

    How many Americans on PDF?

Hey @rmi5 , great to hear from you. A lot more business travel this year (I don't have the patience to post from a cell phone), and a lot more trolling on PDF, so I have reverted to lurking for much of 2015. How have you been?

Rouhani derides failure of ‘warmongering Zionist regime’!

Iran will get approximately $150bn to finish off our allies in the region, then its economy will recover, and then after 10 years, it will build a nuclear weapons stockpile. Even as it signs the agreement, Iran says that the US will remain its enemy. I'm not sure what else they have to do to...

Rouhani derides failure of ‘warmongering Zionist regime’!

It's not like Iran took our diplomats hostage after their Islamic revolution, or blew up our peacekeeping marines in Beirut in 1983, or even now continues to call for America to be destroyed. No, no, continue to close your eyes to the nature of their regime. You live in Norway, so why should...

Rouhani derides failure of ‘warmongering Zionist regime’!

It's true, no one can stop this agreement--Obama easily has 34 Democrat sheep, I mean senators, to follow his orders mindlessly, and prevent a veto override. Obama has sold out the US to the ayatollahs. We won't know just how deep he was in their pocket until the documents are declassified...
