The change in stance was motivated by the realization that any sudden rupture of the Iranian government/system will likely have disastrous consequences for Iran's territorial integrity; that Iran is facing an existential threat by external powers that are hell bent on permanently weaken the Iranian nation; selective and hypocritical policies of western powers with regards to the Middle East; etc.
