Chinese Soldier trapped in India goes home after 50 years

I honestly think we should leave politics aside from this. In the end, this man gets to go home and it's a symbol that at least Sino-Indian can improve. To be fair, some Indian members also came in this thread to say good things and expressed congratulations without trying to start another flame war. I thank you.

Well said.

India and China are not ideologically hateful of each other. In fact, it is rather friendly when you see from pure ideology perspective.

There is a lot of room for improvement between the two countries and we shall try our best.

The major income of Wang's family in India is from Wang‘s son working as an accountant in a company owned by a friend who has been very sympathetic to Wang. It’s about 800 yuan RMB worth per month.

I think that Wang can get some compensation, resettlement expense and pension from China. More importantly Wang‘s son and daughters can learn Chinese and then work in China in the future. Or they could easily operate an Indian restaurant. There are perhaps hundreds,if not thousands,of Indian cookers that are working in China’s restaurants.

Bhopal: Moved by the grand welcome that Wang Qi received in China on his return after 54 years, the other Chinese solider Div Shu Nag Jung in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh too has made up his mind to visit his homeland at least once "before he gets bedridden".

Earlier Div Shu had told TOI that he wanted to live in India forever. "I want to go there once, but am worried whether the Chinese government will allow me to return," he said.

Div Shu Nag — a PLA infantryman — was arrested from Ladakh on January 3, 1963, armed with a machine-gun and 100 bullets.

Now fondly called Cheeni Seth in MP's Tirodi village, he spends his days at a small shop, barely 500m from where Wang lives. Both of them were shifted here in 1968, married local women and have grandkids.

Div Shu is a heart patient and his family is too scared to allow him to fly to China. While Wang Qi ran from pillar to post to be allowed to visit his homeland, Div Shu stayed at home, content to settle in India forever. He has even been trying to get voter rights and other documents required for an Indian citizen. Wang Qi's China trip has moved Div Shu.

Wang Qi was put up in a VIP rest house and will leave for his ancestral house on Monday. It is said that he had seven bowls of noodles on Saturday after an emotional family reunion. Chinese and Indian governments are projecting Wang Qi's story as a positive expression of India-China cooperation.

"I have heard that Wang Qi was felicitated in China and several people came to meet him. Does the Chinese government know that there are two Chinese soldiers in Tirodi?" asked Sunil.

"After Chinese diplomats came to Tirodi, local officials visited our house and said that they will initiate process of giving him Indian citizenship," said Sunil, who has been promised a job by the state government.

Div Shu says no one from his family is left in China. His widowed mother died a few years ago. But he still wants to visit "the country of his birth". "We would be happy if the Chinese government helps my father to visit China. Our condition here is not good," he said.

"Wang was given a warm welcome here. The ministry of foreign affairs had made good arrangements for him. However, Wang Qi and his family have not decided whether they will eventually settle in China or return to Madhya Pradesh," said Manphie Xu, a Guangzhou-based journalist told TOI.

"My father and family are very happy after reaching China. Hundreds of people came to meet us. Emotions ran high," Wang's son Vishnu told TOI from Xian. Wang's wife Sushila and daughter Anita did not accompany him on the long journey to China due to health reasons. "We have got enough time to decide on. As of now we are flooded by visitors," Vishnu said.

These two soldiers' circumstances are slightly different.
Fifty years is a long time, their circumstances have changed.
Whatever they wish, let's hope their wishes are fulfilled.
Doesn't matter if they chose to live in India or China.
Both governments have responsibilities to do all they can.
These two soldiers' families can help to promote a better understanding between both neighboring countries.

Wang Qi in PLA uniform on Saturday

After the cessation of the war with India in 1962 the PLA released all Indian captives immediately. There were around 3-4 thousand and returned in good health.

Why was Wang Qi held in prison for 7 years before being left with out any papers to see to his return to China?

There were a handful of other Chine PLA POWs who were treated awfully in the jungle of Indian Bureaucrazy.

I hope this concludes the nasty episode of the Indian war.

There is no justice under the skies of India.

Who is this Sunil? The son of the Chinese soldier, who said he would stay in India forever and now is looking for some help from Chinese gov?

After all that food he's been sustaining on- it's only natural he could down 7 bowls of Chinese noodles at 1 go.

Bullshit. Wang qi already has stated that he's staying in China for good- the very reason why he even went back. 'feel good' comment by TOI that man 'may' still wanna return to his life in India.

Bullshit. Chinese article already stated his wife and other daughter are still in india due to visa issues - why would his wife and unmarried daughter stay separated from the old man

As usual, take your pick people.

'content to settle in india 'forever'

Even the wording sounds funny. Nice 'India is a rich and prosperous land' propaganda

After all that sticky paste he's been sustaining on- it's only natural he could down 7 bowls of Chinese noodles at 1 go. Now he gets to live a civilized way of living.

hahah.

Once his family is released from Indian inprisonment, than this old soldier can share his true feeling about India. Until then, he need to be careful..

This is indeed a valuable insight. There is no such case of an Indian trapped in China as a POW yet the stories of Chinese being held captive abound.

These are known cases. One wonders how many more cases that have never been made known and will probably be never known.

Hopefully this case will open up a new venue for a better communication between China and India on this issue.

Though I am very sympathetic to Mr. Wang, I felt he should go back to India with his wife, that woman gave him comfort during the hardship and 4 kids, no way to abandon her.

The sharp contrast between the ways to treat POWs, may indicate the gap between the national psyches of two nations. I believe Indian government's actions to withhold the information of Chinese POWs and confine them in either mental hospital or remote village were deliberate.

What an odd Chinese name - Div Shu Nag?

Though I am very sympathetic to Mr. Wang, I felt he should go back to India with his wife, that woman gave him comfort during the hardship and 4 kids, no way to abandon her.
I dont think that is the situation. It's more like he wants his family to settle in China or India but not living separately.

His wife and children were given the choice to come to China. It's up to them if they choose to leave. Given that his son only make 800 rmb per month in India which is peanuts . Can make way more in china
