South Korea's fertility rate falls to lowest in the world

1 MIN READ

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea’s fertility rate fell to the lowest in the world last year, data showed on Wednesday, as uncertainty over the coronavirus discouraged couples from marrying and having children.
The number of expected babies per South Korean woman fell to 0.84 in 2020, dropping further from the country’s previous record low of 0.92 a year earlier, the official annual reading from the Statistics Korea showed.

That is the lowest among over 180 member countries of the World Bank, and far below 1.73 in the United States and 1.42 in Japan.
The grim milestone comes after the population fell for the first time ever last year.

Asia’s fourth-largest economy is the fastest aging country in the OECD. The government has failed to reverse the falling birth rate despite spending billions of dollars each year on childcare subsidies and maternity leave support.
The nation’s capital Seoul logged the lowest birth rate of 0.64.

Good it will give opportunity other desperate 3rd world brides & grooms to be.

That’s terrible. These lot need to cut their stupid long working hours, increase their sex drive and have kids.

Japan and other Asian societies suffer from over working and almost no work/life balance and it gets worse when both husband and wife work.

They should scale back the benefit given to seniors. If they think they are more likely to age and die alone without being looked after, they are more likely to have children.

0.84 / 2.1 replacement rate = 0.4

Each generation will only be 40% the size of the previous generation if this continues.

0.4^2=0.16
0.4^3=0.064

The fourth generation (~100 years) will only be 6.4% the size of the current generation if this continues.

This will force these countries to allow large scale migrations from countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria etc in next 5-10 years. Which in long run will turn the recieving country more heterogeneous. I think this is the way world will see color difference end in 2-3 centuries.

This is the reality all advance countries need to face. It's not something new.

I read before that Japan once considered taxing those without any child. This is to internalize the cost of not having a child. After all from a tax perspective, families with kids (future taxpayers/workforce) are supporting those without any kids in their old age.
But of course it's just an idea which is unlikely to pass in an electoral democracy.

I wonder if China could pull it off.

Lol if you think East Asia is going to allow large scale migration from South Asia with very different skin colour and culture. They would rather shrink to irrelevance and let the economy tank.

The tax idea is alike to apply a man-made bandage on something caused by another man-made bandage, instead of letting the nature taking her course.
