Yemen, China Ink Aden Port Development Deal

The Chinese Capital Beijing hosted the signing ceremony of the expansion and deepening of Aden Container Terminal between Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation and China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. within the framework of the President visit Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi , President of the Republic to the People’s Republic of China.

The project is being implemented at a cost of $ 507 million and includes the construction of an additional berth on the western side of the terminal with a thousand meters length and a depth of 18 meters , as well as the deepening and expansion of the outer navigational channel with 7400 meters length, 250 meters width and a depth of 18 meters in addition to the inner channel with a length of 3800 meters, 230 meters width and a depth of 18 meters.

The agreement also states the deepening and expansion of the turning area and the installation of giant container cranes, RTGs and tractors for the first phase of the berth, to raise the capacity of handling up to a million and a half containers in the year, by adding 500 thousand containers as well as other utilities such as container storage yard, service facilities, administrative buildings and a central workshop for general maintenance.

The agreement was signed by the Chairman of Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation Captain /Sami Saeed Farea and the CEO of the Chinese Company Mr. Mo Won Hi. China Harbor Company, the executing of the project owned by the Chinese government – is one of the oldest and largest Chinese companies in the fields of engineering, ports and airports, and has 62 branches in most countries of the world. Completion of the project will represent a quantum leap for the shipping activities in the Port of Aden which has a great history.

It will also promote future cooperation between Yemen and China.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Transport , Dr. Waed Badheeb , The Minister of Finance Mr. Sakher Al-Wageh, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation , Dr. Mohammed Assadi and Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic Dr. Ali Mansour bin Safaa.

China to build power plants in Yemen, expand ports

SANAA (Reuters) - China will build power plants in Yemen with total output capacity of 5,000 megawatts and expand the Arab country's main container ports, the Yemeni president said after his return from a visit to China, state news agency Saba reported.

Saba news agency cited Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as saying late on Friday that he has agreed with his Chinese counterpart during the visit to "work to set up power plants... using gas and coal and with production capacity that will reach 5,000 MW."

A government official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters China will be building two power plants.

China will also work to expand two container ports in the southern cities of Aden and Mokha at a total cost of $508 million, the agency cited Hadi as saying.

The projects will be funded through a soft loan from the Chinese government, an official at the Yemeni Transportation Ministry told Reuters.

Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country and neighbor to the world's top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia, relies heavily on its sea lanes for trade.

Aden is Yemen's biggest port and one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Other terminals serving Yemen include Mokha on the Red Sea.

The impoverished southern Arabian peninsula country is struggling to tame an insurgency and rebuild its economy after years of conflict.

It suffers from acute power shortages with daily outages. Yemeni tribesmen and al Qaeda-linked militants frequently attack oil pipelines and power lines.

In September, an attack by tribesmen on power lines have caused a widespread blackout in Yemen, including in the capital Sanaa.
