Xinjiang to introduce sea water to solve plight - People's Daily Online

Western China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region government hosted a summit to address its plight of water resources and to brainstorm about possible solutions in the capital city of Urumqi on Nov. 5.

Experts at the forum discussed the possibility of introducing water from Bohai Sea to Xinjiang.

The basic concept is to transport water from the northwest coast of the Bohai Sea to an altitude of 1,200 meters high to deliver it to the southeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and then to Xinjiang from east to west along the 42nd parallel latitude line.

This plan was expected to suppress the desert in Xinjiang by providing abundant water to fill up playa lakes, lagoons and enclosed structural basins in the desert to form artificial seawater rivers and lakes.

According to the plan, the abundance of sunshine in the northwestern region will lead to the natural evaporation of the increased supply of seawater. This is expected to increase rainfall to achieve the goal of desert and dust storm control in north and northwest regions that have a poor ecological environment.

Experts at the forum agreed that the leap-forward development in Xinjiang is of strategic significance in ecology, energy, geography, culture and the livelihood of the polymerization industry.

They believed balanced solution of water resources in Xinjiang not only has ecological and economic benefits, but has more social and political benefits. The introduction of water from the Bohai Sea to Xinjiang will greatly enhance the strategic status of Xinjiang in the Eurasian Continental Bridge.

Experts at the forum also urged all parties to participate in the demonstration and implementation of this cause to solve three problems plaguing the development of Xinjiang: water resources, the ecological environment and the effective development of oil and gas and other mineral resources to promote lasting peace and stability in Xinjiang.

China High-Tech Industrialization Association and other related units attended this forum.
