World military power – which nations are leading the arms race?
How do we assess military strength? Firepower, spending or number of troops?

01army1.jpg

It's more difficult to weigh up the strength of modern militaries than you might think. Our infographic parade ground brings together the 30 countries with the most soldiers for a comparison of military might. China easily takes an unsurprising first place with 2.2 million active troops versus just under 1.5 million US soldiers. But are India (1.3 million soldiers) and North Korea (1.1 million troops) really the third and fourth greatest military powers on the planet?

Maybe not – because gear is a big factor, too: the US has 8,700 tanks, 6,400 attack helicopters and 11 aircraft carriers. Although impressive on their own, India's 5,900 tanks, 140 helicopters and sole aircraft carrier don't really stack up – just one example of the vast capability gaps between all those generals.

But money also talks – especially in America. The US spends more than $700bn a year on its military, which is not only more than any other nation, but more than the next 14 biggest spenders combined.

Perhaps it's not just the results, though, but also the commitment that counts. One way to measure this is to consider how much of a nation's GDP (its annual economic output) is spent on the military. In the US this is a pretty hefty figure (about 4.7%). But that's nothing compared with North Korea, which spends more than 20% of its GDP on its armed forces.

Of course, in reality it's not conventional forces that would be likely to settle any full-on modern contest. We live in the nuclear era, after all, and between them these nations have estimated stockpiles of more than 22,500 warheads. Maybe it's worth giving peace a chance for just a little bit longer, eh?

How do you assess the Military Power on what Basis ?

World military power

As a Marine Corps veteran, I would like to point out that there’s more to military prowess than firepower. There’s no statistic for leadership, no metric for the stuff they pump into you at Parris Island.

But firepower matters ... a lot.

In a world rife with global conflicts, the ability to project power and wield that power decisively is an important national security and diplomatic asset.

The folks at Global Firepower have figured out a way to rank who has the most powerful military.

They measure 40 different stats about a country, including number of aircraft carriers, available manpower, and labor force, to produce a “Power Index,” in which lower numbers equal more firepower.

Note: Nuclear capabilities are not included in this calculation — but Russia and the United States far outpace the rest of the world in nuclear armament, with 8,500 and 7,700 nuclear weapons, respectively.

What is your Choice but on what basis ? Am confused ! ;)

slightly off topic, but i've always wondered how the "peaceful" countries (which don't take defense seriously) like Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, UK, Australia, Italy, etc compare to the ones which have troop numbers in excess of 500,000, and spend a large portion of their funds on military. Countries like Iran, Pakistan, where military is of utmost importance.

I am sure that GoP should make such arrangements to increase the budget of Pak Military to at least $11 Billion when we compare others:
$5 Billion for PA
$3.5 Billion for PAF
$2.5 Billion for PN

Although this will be used to give salaries and maintain equipment and facilities.

we dont need to incease budget what we get we use it wisely on things which we need most like heavy tranposrt aircraft and helicopters and new submarines and small arms on yearly bases
