In 2014 the capacity of the global fleet of merchant ships grew by 3.5%, to a total of 1.75 billion deadweight tonnage (a measure of how much vessels can transport). This was the lowest annual growth rate in over a decade. Ships are delivered several years after they are bought: the slowdown reflects the fact that those arriving in 2014 were ordered in the post-crisis years. Greece and Japan remain the two largest ship-owning countries by capacity, controlling almost 30% of the world’s tonnage in 2014. But China now owns the most ships. Many countries’ ships are registered under foreign flags of convenience, but China has a large proportion of nationally flagged ships used in coastal shipping.

Mainland China + Hong Kong + Taiwan = Greece。:D:D

Shipping (services, not shipbuilding which is almost entirely in East Asia) is the most important pillar of Greek economy since decades ago, along with which in the value chain are a plethora of professions like shipbrokers, insurance brokers, bankers, ship suppliers, seafarers, ship repairers, ship agents and academics, etc. The "shipping tycoons" also have special status in the country, including the famous Greek shipowner Onassis who married Jacqueline Kennedy.

More importantly, the tax on shipping business is very favorable (zero tax on overseas earnings i.e. services "exports"), making it attractive for shipowners to register their assets in the country. Please check Greek Constitution (on articles specific to shipping) and other related legislation for details.

China VLCC, a joint venture between China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) and Sinotrans, has sold two secondhand very large crude carriers (VLCCs) for USD133 million.

The 297,600 dwt and 297,400 dwt vessels were sold to two Marshall Island-registered companies, Tilos Shipping Corporation and Delos Shipping Corporation, respectively.

The two VLCCs were said to be around 6-7 years old, according to CMES' filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

China VLCC bought two used VLCCs for USD165 million from Sinokor Merchant Marine in April 2015. According to IHS Maritime's Sea-web.com, the vessels are 2009-built Beijing Sunrise and 2011-built Dalian Glory, which had been chartered by Nanjing Tanker before the company terminated the contract in 2014.

Since its inception in September 2014, China VLCC - 51% owned by CMES and 49% owned by Sinotrans - has operated a fleet size of around 30 VLCCs
