Well done....

A 10-meter long periscope, indigenously developed for a nuclear reactor at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam and claimed to be the longest in the world, was dedicated to the nation today.

The Rs. 3.9-crore periscope, manufactured by city-based Visual Education Aids (P) Ltd (VEA) in collaboration with IGCAR and others, was handed over to Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam (Bhavini), Kalpakkam, by IGCAR Director S.C. Chetal here.

The periscope is the longest in the world and would be used in the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor to view objects inside the reactor during maintenance, Mr. Chetal said.

VEA Director J Balu said the periscope, to be taken to Kalpakkam soon, can be remotely operated and also has motorised facilities for scanning the area of interest and image zooming and rotation.

The Applied Spectroscopy Division, Division of Remote Handling and Robotics and Centre for Design and Manufacture of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Mumbai were also involved in the two-year long project, Mr. Balu said.

Fast Breeder Reactor
10-August, 2011

A 500 Mwe prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) is an advanced technology reactor designed and built indigenously. The plant is expected to be commissioned in 2012. It is being built at Kalpakkam near Chennai in tamilnadu with a project cost of Rs. 3492 crore. A proposal for upward revision of cost is under consideration. Further Rs. 250 crore have been allocated for pre-project activities of two more units at the same site.

The project is delayed due to the initial setback in construction activities due to Tsunami and in later stages due to technological complexities in manufacturing several first of a kind equipment.

Shri V. Narayanasamy, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions and in the Prime Minister’s Office gave this information in a written reply to a question by Shri Anand Prakash Paranjpe in Lok Sabha today.

^^ yes ...periscope for fast breeder reactor which uses thorium as fuel

ISI should do their job now.....
Thorium reactors are much needed in Pakistan.

Its not likely to produce any by product which can be used for making nuclear weapons. Ask nicely and India will build a reactor for you with a life time of thorium supply because you see India has the biggest reserves of thorium.

@Kinetic, thanx for such a great pictures...

Are you proposing a terrorist attack there? This is too bad mentality! :hitwall: Support of extremism does fuel it.

Dude actually it does.

In FBR....

Thorium + Plutonium -----(FBR)----->>> Uranium-233 + Plutonium

So it actually converts Th into U-233 which is the fuel for all Uranium based nuclear weapons. It is upto govt for what they want to use it.

Yes, the primary fuel of the Indian FBR is Thorium and secondary fuel is Plutonium but produces Plutonium and Uranium-233 which can be again used as fuel or making nukes. The FBR is famous for making for fuel than it absorbs.

See how much shiny this is from bottom. All the debris on ground is mirrored on it.

BTW how much large it is !! cant believe it is suspended by just few points

Its not the reflection, its the bottom original state.
