The US embassy in Rangoon funded some of the civil society groups in the Burmese region that forced the government to suspend a controversial Chinese dam on the Irrawaddy river, according to a US diplomatic cable.

The January 2010 cable on the $3.6bn (£2.3bn) Myitsone dam project noted that local groups had "voiced strong opposition to the project on economic, environmental and cultural grounds and have organised grassroots campaigns to rally others to their cause".

The cable, signed by then US charge d'affaires, Larry Dinger, went on to say: "An unusual aspect of this case is the role grassroots organisations have played in opposing the dam, which speaks to the growing strength of civil society groups in Kachin state, including recipients of embassy small grants."

Dinger said that although Burma had launched a number of hydropower projects to address its acute electricity shortages, the Myitsone dam was widely seen as a Chinese project, with China the principal beneficiary.

"Given past evidence from foreign investments in Burma's energy sector, it is very likely, as many locals believe, that both construction of the dam and the energy it produces will primarily benefit Chinese companies and consumers, rather than Burmese," he said.

Presciently, he added: "Dam-related social unrest is a possibility in light of the already-tense political situation in Kachin state and the dislocations the project is expected to cause."

America! America! God shed his grace on thee!

They opposed the dam, not the fact that the Chinese were making it. There is always an opposition to mega hydel projects by natives and locals who face the threat of being displaced. The damage to the eco system is also to be factored in. In most cases, if the compensation and rehabilitation package is generous, the protests die down.

It was the will of the people, for once the government of Myanmar listened. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.:)

Even if the US embassy in Rangoon financed these groups that forced the government to suspend the dam project?

Old American tactic paying local thugs and criminals to organize themselves as pressure groups to oppose national development of countries. That is what they did in Operation Ajax and since then they have done it tens of thousands of times. This is the reason sometimes the free independent governments have to crush hard some of these thugs which then western media shows as human rights violation without referring to US involvement in the whole scenario.

Well done yankees...

They will do the same for dams in Indian occupied Kashmir too.

The dam was of no benefit to the people of Myanmar because the electricity was to be sold to China. The Dam would have displaced some of the people of Myanmar though.

How is wikileaks still able to access & releasing info without check,,,!?!?!
Isn't this site & it's staff under scrutiny...!!!

This is just Americans under the guise of this website,,, like Americans release statements under guise of Al-CIAdah & also like they took responsibility for Norway massacre that was done by christian-terrorist... :)

Nope, the reason Myanmar delayed the dam is that they had a new president and a new goverment, which means the new president will need a reason to ask the Chinese to fill his new pocket with brand new cash.Untill his request was satisfied, there will be a delay on the dam.Believe me,we will fill in his pocket and the project will carry on.That's something happening when you want to do business in the developing world as the certain country happens to change its goverment.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Wikileaks had bulk of intelligence documents that were given to it by insiders within the American military. Due to internal fighting within Wikileaks the whole bulk was leaked recently. You can download the entire cache now if you want. The US wants to extradite Assange, he will face severe punishment if this happens. Will be interesting what happens over the next week, if Assange is extradited to Sweden his fate is pretty much sealed. Sweden is a US puppet and will hand him over without any problems. Have a look at all the statement by US politicians, they consider Assange a "cyber terrorist" The US has nothing to gain by having those documents released.
US took responsibility to the Norway massacre? Thats crazy.
