The White House has submitted a fiscal year 2024 budget to Congress requesting $886.4 billion in total national defense spending , with $842 billion specifically for the Defense Department, or an increase of slightly more than 3% above what lawmakers enacted for FY-23, according to the Office of Management and Budget. Also, at the height of the Reagan buildup in the 1980s the US was spending 6.8% of GDP on defense. If we spent that today that’d be over $1.7T. The US has huge room for defense spending ramp up.
Also, defense spending is currently well below its historical average of 4% as a share of GDP. 1Trillion defense budget actually makes a lot of sense.
