Defence engineering firm WFEL has completed an £8.5m contract for the Turkish military.

The order was secured in 2008 for a supply of WFEL's next generation dry support military bridges.

They are used by soldiers in a range of military and humanitarian operations, from crossing rivers and ravines to mounting rescue missions in areas struck by natural disasters, and can be deployed in under 90 minutes to span gaps of up to 46 metres.

Under the agreement, WFEL also procured the OshKosh vehicles on which the bridges will be transported.

As part of the agreement, WFEL’s specialists will deliver training on location in Turkey.

The business, which is backed by private equity firm Dunedin, has been designing and manufacturing tactical military bridges at its Stockport headquarters since the 1970s.

There are currently more than 600 WFEL bridges in use by almost 40 different armed forces worldwide.

Ian Wilson, chief executive of WFEL, said: “This agreement typifies the end-to-end service offering we have developed, from manufacturing the bridges to procuring the launch vehicles and then delivering training to new users on the ground.

“We have now opened the door to what we hope will be the first of many orders from Turkey as we continue to roll out our export strategy based on establishing WFEL products in new territories.”

Earlier this month, WFEL sealed a £57m deal, the second biggest contract in the company's history, to supply dry support bridges to the Swiss army between 2013 and 2015.

The deal followed a two-year contest against rivals such as BAE Systems and EADS. WFEL was named as the preferred contractor earlier this year before the deal was passed to the Swiss parliament for approval.
