After a short-lived break violence has returned to the campuses of some major educational institutions killing at least one and injuring more than 200 people over the last few days. In the latest incident, an Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) leader was killed and at least 100 people were injured in fierce clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and ICS activists at Rajshahi University (RU) on March 13.The authorities have closed the university sine die and asked the students to vacate their dormitories. Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) and Rajshahi Government College were also closed sine die following the RU clashes. The clashes ensued on RU campus on Friday following Wednesday's attack by ICS men on the BCL activists leaving 20 of them injured.

On Thursday night, BCL filed a case against 500 Shibir men in connection with Wednesday's incident that left at least 20 of its activists injured. Subsequently police raided all the 11 male dormitories and arrested 68 Shibir men. Infuriated by this the Shibir cadres locked entrances of all the dormitories and attacked BCL men and injured 30 of them. And in retaliation BCL activists launched a counter- attack and fierce clashes took place between the two groups.

Earlier, more than one hundred students belonging to different student organizations were injured in different institutions including Jahangirnagar University, Rajshshi University, Rajshahi Medical College, Dhaka University, Jagannath University and Chittagong University. On March 10, intra-party feud left at least 15 BCL activists injured at Jahnagirnagar University. At least 16 BCL activists and five Shibir men were injured at the Rajshshi Medical College on March 10 when they were locked in fierce clashes as a sequel of previous enmity. On March 11, BCL activists beat up three activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on the Jagannath University campus over a trifling matter. Three JCD activists came under BCL attack in the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday 'as a sequel of previous enmity.' Another JCD worker was attacked by BCL activists on DU campus on Thursday.

All these speak of growing unrest and violence on the campuses which signal a bleak future for educational atmosphere and democracy in the country. This violent incidents apparently resulted from the politics of string being followed by the student organisations that serves more the purposes of the political parties than the interests of the students. We will prefer stopping short of recommending a ban on student politics, but strongly reiterate our views that effective mechanism must be found out and executed to undo the nexus between a section of leaders of political parties and student organisations responsible for vitiating the campus atmosphere.
