Turkey's Karayel tactical UAV in flight test milestone
Turkish firm Vestel Savunma Sanayi has completed the first test flight of its production-standard Karayel tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Vestel is to deliver six Karayel UAVs, three ground control stations and auxiliary systems to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) once test flights are completed, the privately-owned company said on 6 May. The Karayel is intended to be used primarily for surveillance missions.
A smaller prototype technology demonstrator model made its first flight in 2009 - although the production version is markedly different. The final version conducted its first flight on 30 April, Vestel stated.
The company told
IHS Jane's that the latest version is "covering completely different specifications" to the prototype.
The final version of the Karayal features an inverted T-tail, a maximum take-off weight of 550 kg, can carry a 70 kg payload, has an endurance of 20 hours, and an operational altitude of 22,500 ft. In contrast, the prototype featured a V-tail design, a maximum take-off weight of 280 kg, a payload of 35 kg, an endurance of 10 hours, and an operational altitude of 18,000 ft.
