Two high-speed railways open on July 1st
One in Southwest China's Yunnan Province: Kunming-Dali HSR
One in South China's Guangdong Province: Shenzhen-Zhanjiang HSR

Now, we can take bullet trains to one of China's most iconic tourist sites,
Dali ancient town by the heavenly Erhai Lake!
Say goodbye to the 5-hour coach or slow train
Now less than 2 hours!!!

Services will be further extended
to the UNESCO world heritage site Lijiang Ancient Town,
currently two hours by slow train north from Dali

Lijiang and around

Dali and Lijiang are one of my favourite places in China,
Now only an expressway and a slow railway link these two cities, very busy in the summer.
Hope the new bullet train services could easy some pressure.

Except for the inauguration of new lines,
on July1st some railways saw maximum speed increasing to 250km/h.
For example, Liuzhou-Nanning passenger-dedicated line is now running at 250km/h with Fuxing bullet trains

Nice. Hope they retain the slower trains too.
For short journeys trains give a good flavour of local culture.

Overnight trains from kunming to Dali have been cancelled,
I don't think 6-7 hour for 359km still makes any sense now, especially at night.
But Kunming- Lijiang trains are retained.
However, when Dali-Lijiang section finishes speed-upgrading, I'm pretty sure all of them will be cancelled.

I took a trip from Kunming to Lijiang by train in 2010, sleeper ticket, around 200rmb.

When Dali-Lijiang section finishes speeding-up, it will take less than 3 hours from Kunming, and costs less than 200 yuan.
Now, there are 20+ bullet per day to Dali.

I am so envious towards people in Kunming, they can go to Dali/Lijiang for a weekend trip.

The build up of new lines with higher domestic content needs to be sped up, in my view. It is still much faster than many other countries but not fast enough to match the pace of China's development.

Yes, it's fast enough to the rest of the world, but not so fast for China!
