The deal to supply steel for hulls of the four Successor boats – part of the £41billion renewal of the Trident programme – is worth tens of millions
The £41billion Trident replacements will be built with French steel
The Tories have snubbed British steel for the new fleet of Trident nuclear missile submarines.
A French firm won the contract to supply metal for the hulls. It could have protected at least 1,000 UK jobs.
Union boss Roy Rickhuss said: “This is a betrayal of British workers.”
Work on the £41billion Successor submarines starts in Cumbria today.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon will cut a steel plate to mark the start of work on Britain’s new fleet of nuclear submarines.
But to steelworkers it will be seen as a betrayal after the Mirror discovered the metal will come from France.
The deal to supply steel for hulls of the four Successor boats – part of the £41billion renewal of the Trident programme – is worth tens of millions.
Had the work been kept in the UK , it could have protected 1,000 jobs and helped save part of the Scunthorpe plant where three plate mills were mothballed.
Instead it will boost French industry after going to Industeel.
Roy Rickhuss, head of steelworkers’ union Community, said: “The Defence Secretary is boasting about cutting steel while in reality these submarines have snubbed British-made steel.
"This is a betrayal of British steelworkers.”
Labour Shadow Defence Secretary Clive Lewis added: “The Tory obsession with cost-cutting means they are not even using British steel to build our ships and vehicles.”
We can reveal two UK firms planned a joint bid to supply steel plate for the hulls.
But it is understood they hit hurdles during initial discussions and decided to abandon it.
BAE Systems , which is building the subs in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, opted for the French supplier after signing its Government contract.
But it is understood the deal did not stipulate British steel should be used.
BAE said: “We expect to procure pressure hull steel for Successor from Industeel in France, with the remainder provided through stockists who source from mills in both UK and Europe.”
The Mirror’s Save Our Steel campaign has exposed how the Tories have used foreign metal for defence projects worth billions, while Britain’s industry reels from cheap imports and soaring energy costs.
An artist's impression of how the Successor submarine's could look
A Ministry of Defence spokesman insisted: “It is an early stage of the programme, but there will be British steel in the new submarines.”
