Third unit of Bharat Dynamics coming up at Vizag
Public sector undertaking Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a manufacturer of precision guided munitions and guided missile systems based out of Hyderabad, is setting up its third manufacturing unit in the state at Visakhapatnam.
Union Minister of state for Defence Pallam Raju on Monday laid the foundation for the Rs 61-crore project.
BDL already has two units in the state and Vizag will be the third unit. We have plans to set up two more production centres in the state shortly, Major General Ravi Khetarpal, chairman and managing director of BDL, said.
The company recorded a turnover of Rs 627 crore in 2009-10, up 35 per cent over the previous year. In the current fiscal, it is targeting a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore and expects this to reach Rs 5,000-crore mark in the next five years, he said.
The Vizag plant would be ready in a year. Khetarpal said the unit in first year would achieve a turnover of Rs 100 crore and later touch Rs 1,000 crore.
The company already produces light weight torpedos and will also shortly produce heavy weight torpedos, mines and decoys for the Indian Navy from the Vizag unit.
BDL is getting enquires from other countries for import of our products for which we are awaiting governments permissions, he said.
