One of the funniest men in bollywood Deven Verma passed away on 2 December, leaving behind a treasure of great work in bollywood that brought smile to so many of his fans.
An average Indian takes refuge of films to forget whatever is wrong in life and for few hours lives the dream with the characters of the movie. Admiring the Hero, loving the Heroine, Hating the villain and above all laughing with the Comedian.
I try to collect those men and women from Indian Film and Television industry who brought smile to millions but alas are no more.
Here it goes...
Johny Walker
Born Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi, one the earliest and probably the greatest of his era.
The greatest tribute to him can be summed up by lyrics of one his immortal songs
Sir jo Tera Chakraye, ya dil duba jaye, aaja pyare pass hamare, kahe ghabraye, kahe ghabraye..
Mehmood
Born in a family of 8 children, Mehmood sahab's father had a bollywood connection.
but Mehmood went onto act in an innumerable films many of them were laugh riots like Padosan, Johar Mehmood in HoHong KongBhoot Bangla, Andaaz Apna Apna.... the list goes on. If there is a Comic Genius in Hindi Film Industry, it has to be him.
I S Johar
Inderjit Singh Johar or the Johar of Johar Mehmood films. He himself rarely laughed, but with comic skills of his, made many of his fan do what today's generation would call ROFL.
Rajender Nath
Rajender Nath (Malhotra) was born in Pakistan and was a regular in almost all of Nasir Hussain and Manoj kumar movies. He perhaps is one of the most underrated comic actors of his era, but boy didn't he knew how to tickle funny bone.
Keshto Mukherjee
Resident Drunkard character of Bollywood. Keshto and Daroo (Wine) was a match made in heaven. He was in perpetual love with his Baatli just the way fans were with him.
Mukri
he started as a character artist, but later switched to comic roles in a career spanning nearly 6 decades. Famous Tayyab Ali from the movie Amar Akbar Anthony.
Tun Tun
Uma devi Khatri, but to the generation of fans she was simply Tun Tun. I sometimes get a feeling on why she was called so. (Think of Yorkshire accent), She weighed a TUN (ton) and off course was a TUN of Laughs.
Manorma
She played role of evil lady in numerous films, but somehow to me she always brought laughs. Some of the funniest facial expressions.
Deven Verma
(aap pursuh nahin................. maha pursh hain
Deven was a regular in some of the greatest (& cleanest) comic movies that came out from iconic directors like Basu Chatterjee, Hrikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar. His role of Amir Khan's father in 1994 cult hit Andaaz Apna Apna remains my favorite.
Jaspal Bhatti
The Funniest Sardar on Indian Television. Back in pre-liberalization and DD only India in very early 90s, his iconic production FLOP SHOW made millions laugh. He had his stint in bollywood but wasn't as successful.
He truly epitomizes the Punjabi spirit of celebrating life.
