According to the information obtained, the service informed Chief of General Staff about the need to begin the construction of TCG Trakya, the twin of Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) TCG ANADOLU. The Navy stated that the timing of construction of the second ship would have many advantages both in terms of construction time and program cost.

The second phase of the program will include the supply of vertical landing aircraft to be deployed on TCG Trakya. Accordingly, the total number of F-35B aircraft demanded by the service will also be revised.

Although it is not officially requested from the US yet, the Navy plans to buy 16 aircraft per LHD. If all goes as planned, Turkey will have purchased 100 F-35As and 32 F-35Bs.

Primary stand off weapon of Turkish F-35B stationed on LHD's will be SOM-J missiles developed by Roketsan. F-35 with 2 SOM-J at inner sections will provide a strategic anti-ship and land attack saturation attack capability. SOM-J is promoted by LockHeedMartin under a deal with Roketsan.

so basically with these LHD will turn into ACC after F35Bs are delivered. Nice alternative to the full size ACC.

Bro,i dont get it,when did they change the configuration of TCG ANADOLU?

U.S carriers can carry upto 75 aircrafts each!

So it's not an alternative. LHD's can be nice supplements to aircraft carriers but not alternatives.

Turkey needs to build an Aircraft Carrier that can carry atleast 35-40 aircrafts at once...

:pop:Turkey is not getting any F35 0% chance
What makes you think so?

Yeah I mean they are mini ACC with 16 A/C each so 3-4 LHDs working as group can replace a full ACC. But then the question will be cost and management issues but I think technically and economically it is more feasible to take LHD route but only if vtol A/Cs are available.

You cannot replace a fleet carrier (or full size carrier) with multiple LHD with F-35B.

F-35B on a LHD is used for interdiction role, not air superiority role. Basically it was used to support the Landing element of a LHD group. Flying CAS and intercept occasional enemy Air/Ground attack aircraft.

Fleet Carrier is used to contest local air superiority for an extended period of time, which allow any type of aircraft to fly within the AO the carrier operating on without prejudice.

What is different you may ask? You will need to use the F-35B to dual role if you also use them in air superiority, which mean you taken over some Landing Force support from the LHD, which mean you either need to request for more sortie or you need to thin out your landing force.

In the US Navy Amphibious doctrine, if LHD/LHA group operate without Fleet Carrier support, then 2 LHD/LHA would from a shield and sword where 1 of the LHD would fit out for maximum A2/AD role (which is full 26 compliment of F-35B) and the other LHD would serve as Land Support coordinator (which will have 6 to 10 F-35B dedicated for CAS to support the landing force)
