The world-renowned S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system was available to foreign buyers at the OboronExpo 2014 in Moscow, Friday. Manufacturer Almaz-Antei are believed to be in talks with China and India among other states in regards to setting up service centres for the advanced weaponry. The S-400 is the enhanced version of the S-300 surface-to-air missile series.

The system is capable of launching 40N6, 48N6 and 9M96 long-distance missiles capable of knocking down planes from a 400 km (248 mile) range at an altitude of up to 30 km (19 miles). Its long-and medium-range system is capable of launching up to 72 missiles and engaging up to 36 targets simultaneously, from aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles to cruise missiles.

Each S-400 battalion is composed of four to eight launchers, a multifunction radar, detection and targeting systems, anti-aircraft missile systems and a mobile command post. The SP85TE2 launchers can carry up to four missile tubes, while the 92N6E fire control and target tracking radar can track 300 targets simultaneously within a distance of 600 km (372 miles).

I would hate to break the Russian ego here, but aren't these SAM systems more hyped up? I mean they have never been tested in an air combat and unlike the original S-100 (SA75) which shot down many aircraft, one cannot expect much from them yet? Or is there a way to test these against NATO aircraft like f-16, f-15 and moreover the f-22.

Any practical success of S-300 or S-400 or S-500 SAMs yet?

Mate in case of SAM's Russia is a giant and no one is near to that

Is the S400 available for sale to all countries without bias?

Its not really always a defensive weapon. In bordering countries it can be used as an offensive tool as well, putting aircraft deep in enemy territory at risk.

S-400 is a defensive weapons.

The problem is - not so many countries can afford it.

What is the cost?

Pakistan would like to buy it, if it needs it desperately, money comes from everywhere, but S-400 has to prove its worth first.

S-500 is just a prototype so far, and even if it gets built, it will be in very low numbers. For Russia these days, these kind of systems are very expencive to built. Russia is facing stagnation this year, and moderate recession next year - and 2016 isn't looking much better as of now, either.

You can't test S-300PMU2 and S-400 in real combat, as the countries the U.S. and its allies are brutally attacking, doesn't have anything close to that kind of modern systems or modern aircraft for that matter.

It's very easy to launch Tomahawks and send B-2 stealth bombers against Iraq and Libya, while the U.S. and it's allies continue to support terrorists in Syria. So there hasn't been any countries that can test this out.

However, there has been some hypothetical testing of earlier S-300 models.

Either way, even though S-300PMU2 and S-400 are excellent SAMs, a few of these cannot stop a fully mobilized Western attack. Therefore, most likely, only China and Russia have enough SAMs combined with numbers of aircraft, missiles, submarines, frigates & destroyers to put up a fight.

The cost is 500 million USD for S-400. Countries that Russia would like to export to is Algeria, China, India and Vietnam. However, I don't think China is going to buy it. India is way too busy with ordering French, U.S. and Israeli weapons, and Vietnam I don't think has the money or the need for a system like that. Also it would definitely force China to buy it, if Vietnam decides to buy it. So basically, if one of them buys it, the other one will too.

Very long range SAMs are an excuse for not having achieved air superiority.... ;-)
