The memorial is a tribute to the soldiers who saved Fazilka

BATHINDA: The heroic acts of 226 soldiers, who are called the “saviours of Fazilka,” are etched on the war memorial, ‘Shaheedon Ki Samadhi’, in Asafwala village some 7 kilometres from India-Pakistan border in Fazilka district.

“A fierce hand to hand combat took place between soldiers of both countries here. This point was logistically crucial for the Indian Army to stop the advance of the Pakistani Army”, explained committee president Sandeep Gilhotra and secretary Prafful Nagpal.

Major Narain Singh, who led the Indian troops in Fazilka Sector was engaged in a hand-to-hand combat with Major Shabbir Sharif, elder brother of Pakistan’s former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif. Maj Narain, who was commanding a company of 4 Jat Regiment with his men, stopped the Pakistan army from heading to Fazilka and was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously.

“The valiance of Maj Narain was appreciated even by the Pakistan army. Maj Gen (retd) Fazal Muqeem Khan, in his book, ‘Pakistan: Crisis in leadership’ mentioned Maj Narain’s bravery. He wrote that had soldiers like Maj Narain Singh been with the Pakistan army, the story would have been different,” old-timers recalled.

Had this general contributed to the uplifting of valour and morale of soldiers working under his command we wouldn't be hearing this from him - don't need new timers to fix this self pity

What's a Samadhi?

Why Gandhi not get to be called Shaheed in India? Why only this title is reserved for colonial military of Indians?

"Samadhi" is a Sanskrit word meaning Qabr or resting place. It could be a real one with bones interred or could be a symbolic one.
