The Punjab cabinet approved an underground mass transit system for Lahore this Friday, as well as the inclusion of subterranean blue and purple line mass transit projects as a part of the Annual Development Program.

The decision was taken at the sixth cabinet meeting, which was chaired by the Punjab Chief Minister (CM), Chaudhry Parvez Elahi.

The CM declared on the occasion that he did not wish to damage Lahore by introducing an underground railway system. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help start the Blue Line, Purple Line, and mass transportation projects.

He went on to say that the project will be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis, with no money coming from the Punjab government.

The subway would run from Valencia Town to Karma Chowk, Liberty Chowk, and Data Darbar, eventually reaching the airport.

Eight major Orange Line railway stations would also be built. The cabinet also authorized the Planning and Development Board and the Transport Department to negotiate technical assistance and finance with the ADB.

Faisalabad needs mass transport more than Lahore as it's the foremost industrial city of Punjab

Lahore in comparison isn't as productive- tax spending should be based on law of return

It seems foolish. Going underground would increase cost many folds.

Its only way forward, Orange line should have been build that way. Go underground even if project take more time and money.

Even if the projects are built on a BOT model, will the cost of their operations be subsidized in any way (such as cheap land, cheap electricity, etc.), by the government?

If it’s all private money and someone wants to invest, it’s great news. The key being that this venture not be given any public funds.

Underground mean no need to buy land or much land at all. Though I'm not sure how it will be 100% private, govt will have to bear some cost.

Delhi underground metro cost

"It has 28 underground stations, 3 new lines, and 7 route extensions, totaling 160.07 kilometres (99.46 mi), with a cost of ₹410.079 billion (US$5.1 billion)."

Thats $32m per KM.

Lahore over the ground orange line cost

" The 27-kilometre metro train is expected to cost 2251.06 billion Rupees($1.65 Bn"

thats $61m per km, wtf

Can any Indian verify if Delhi metro cost is correct?

If costs are to be kept low, the trains could be built with a cut and cover method, which would require building under roads at a minimum. At the very least, land will be needed for stations and ventilation shafts, buildings.

Your right, someone should investigate those numbers in terms of the Lahore metro construction costs. If this project ends up a government project those costs should be investigated before any government funds are promised to back up these projects.

So essentially the SAME plan that SS had put in place before the King IK's rule, is BACK to work now. Only name changing on papers and inauguration by Mr. Elahi. The biggest daku of Punjab. Let's find out who he contracts with. His corruption go to group is the Malh group. Let's see the contractors he's picked for this mega project from NS's time. The army even wanted this project to be built with FWO's help but I believe they bypassed all that.

The Delhi Metro consists of several phases built over different periods of times starting 1990s. If your idea is to compare Delhi and Lahore Metro (and hopefully establish that the Sharifs are crooks) it wont be very helpful.
