PML-N's new government in Punjab will organise 'Punjab Development and Governance Conference' in the first week of June, to devise a five-year plan to develop the provincial economy as a model with focus on value addition both in industrial and agricultural sectors.

Stakeholders and experts from different sectors will participate in the conference and it will not only develop a five-year plan but annual budget will also be prepared through proposed recommendations to achieve the goal of economic uplift and prosperity. This was disclosed by Ahsan Iqbal, PML-N's Deputy Secretary General, while addressing a programme arranged by the Lahore Economic Journalists Association (LEJA) here on Wednesday.

He briefed the LEJA members about the priorities of his party after assuming the power. Earlier, LEJA President, Fakhir Malik and General Secretary, Muhammad Luqman briefed the guests on the working of the association on this occasion. Ahsan said Punjab's potential for development is in agriculture and the next government is focusing on promoting value addition and agro-based industry for economic development. He also disclosed that chief executives of loss-making state-owned enterprises would also be removed to end financial loss worth of Rs 450 billion annually to national exchequer.

"Applications for these apex posts will be advertised in media on the very first day of the new federal government and competent Pakistani professionals will be appointed with major task to end the losses to the public sector enterprises and make them self dependent."

He claimed that the PML-N's previous government in Punjab had adopted zero tolerance for corruption over the last five years and a similar policy would be adopted for federal and Balochistan in the next five years. Ahsan said the new government will inherit unprecedented energy crisis, financial constraints, poor law and order and bad governance.

"However, the PML-N is committed to make every possible effort to mitigate the sufferings of people, caused by power outages. In this connection, short-term and long-term measures are being taken. But it will be illogical to give any deadline or date for the end of loadshedding. This may lead to media trial of the new government," he added.

The PML-N leadership has evolved a strategy to control the ongoing energy crisis as well as to reduce cost of energy generation. The focus of the PML-N government would be on coal, hydel, natural gas and solar power generation, which are all indigenous resources. The PML-N believes that without utilising the indigenous power generation resources, production of cheap energy will not be possible. On the other hand, the cheap and smooth energy is also vital for industrial and agricultural growth, he said.

He said his party would also ensure implementation of incentives that it had promised in its electioneering manifesto. "The PML-N also has a big task of increasing tax-to-GDP ratio. It was 13.5 percent in 1999, which has declined to around 9 percent. With limited resources, money cannot be spared for new development projects, unless revenue generation is materialised to its potential. However, the PML-N government would ensure that public tax money should be spent on projects that provide better living to the masses," he said.
