Pictures of 52nd Sikhs

The 52nd Sikhs (Frontier Force) was an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. It was raised in 1846 as the 2nd Regiment of Infantry The Frontier Brigade. It was designated as the 52nd Sikhs (Frontier Force) in 1903 and became 2nd Battalion (Sikhs) 12th Frontier Force Regiment in 1922.

In 1947, it was allocated to the Pakistan Army, where it continues to exist as 4th Battalion The Frontier Force Regiment

The British classified the Afridi in 8 different clans, with many subtribes in a hierarchical structure:

Kuki Khel
Malikdín Khel
Qambar Khel
Kamar Khel
Zakha Khel
Aka Kel
Sepáh
Adam Khel/bazid khel

Can someone educate me on this and how relevant is this hierachy today ?

they are simply clans of the bigger tribe and still exist today. any afridi will tell you what Afridi he is if you know the area and the tribe. there is no hierarchy as you put it in terms of Hindu caste system

they were named because of their family heads and where they chose to settle.

The sub-clans exist to this day, however they are identified as Afridis. More detailed classification has been ruled out in favour of the common root tribal name. For example the people from Bannu are referred to as 'Bannusi' even though they consist of over 20 sub-clans.

Many thanks

I was aware that there could not be a hierarchy like the Hindu system but was curious as to why the Brits created one as I read in Wiki which I had C&P.
