Pakistani media and journalism part 1 | Thinker's club

Journalist and media play a very important role in informing people the things they don’t know and building a knowledgeable society. It is a profession which can bring lots of change to a society. An informed society is very important to maintain its freedom, be aware of its rights and fight for its rights. Journalism plays a very important role in shaping up the society.

Pakistan is a free country and Pakistanis live in a free society, information is freely available and the Pakistani journalists are some of the luckiest people in the world where they can manage the freedom provided to them by the state to conduct their journalism in whatever way they want. Even though in my view, it is very important to have freedom for journalists and media and they should be allowed to freely practice their profession, too much freedom without established code of conduct s leading to misuse of freedom in a negative way. First of all i would like to say that many Pakistanis journalists don’t have the right qualification to adopt such profession. Many times i have observed some random news casters were promoted to the political talk shows which are only exclusive to qualified journalists.

It is very important for journalist to remain unbiased on the matters. It is also important for journalist to have a deep ground research on the subject before he discusses it. It is also important for journalist to avoid any kind of sarcasm which would reflect his biased attitude. Journalists should avoid blaming and they must have the concrete proofs of the facts and figures in order to support their view points. The audience must never be misled into forming a false opinion. Truth must be the prime tool for any professional journalist to practice a true journalism. Journalist must avoid favouritism.

journalist code of conduct and ethics in bullet points

Code of Ethics - Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) » Pakistan Media Commission Review

1) Should be politically neutral and unbiased should avoid sarcastic attitude

2) Should have proofs and should not accuse anybody on false info

3) Should not become judgemental

4) Should not sell out

5) Should conduct tv programs in such a way that equal opportunity is given to every guest to defend himself, if lengthy questions are asked then enough time must be given for the guest to answer that question

6) Should avoid unnecessary sensationalism

7) Should base his knowledge on facts and quantified figures rather than perceptions

8) Should avoid favouritism

9) Should be well mannered

10) Should be credible

Terminology of Lifafa journalism (yellow journalism):

Lifafa is an urdu word meaning envelope. This terminology has been used by specific political supporters to reflect certain journalists who might be suspected of taking bribe money to be partial. I would like to draw a clear line both for journalists and those political supporters who may be involved in maligning this sacred profession.

Some journalist or wannabe journalists in their talk shows accept bribe in order to protect dirty politicians. Some journalists for example Mubashir Lucman have been caught red handed in doing lifafa journalism. The ethics of print and electronic media dictates such people must have been banned long time ago when they were found guilty of selling out their profession in order to protect people with dirty background. Mubashir Lucman took money from certain corrupt people in order to protect them from exposing them to the public. Although he was kicked from the original broadcaster he was working for, he was not banned from the media and he got a more lucrative job from another broadcaster. The ethics of media dictates he should have been not only banned from appearing in public in front of the media again but should have been jailed for malpractice of yellow journalism. Similar stuff goes to meher bukhari who should have been banned and jailed for her misconduct but she is continuously appearing in the media.

The political supporters are also requested not to accuse any journalist of practicing yellow journalism if a journalist’s criticism is based on facts, truths

TRP ratings:

Even though TRP ratings are important for media to generate money and do good business but TRP ratings must not be on the perils of credibility and quality. TRP gained through more sensationalism, cheap ways to attract more viewership, more melodramas, more spicy stuff then concrete realities, facts, truths should be discouraged through strict media regulations because it not only wastes people’s time but the very important role of media and journalists to impart knowledge to them fails. Informing people well is more important that entertaining them with sensationalism. The cultural, social values and professionalism must be taken into account.

Media must be careful not to promote people like terrorists, criminals etc. Media should therefore be careful that it doesn’t act in a way which accomplishes their agenda. Media can unknowingly highlight the criminals, terrorists in such a way that instead of been taken as terrorists/criminals, they are taken as heroes. Its important for media not to sympathise with them.

It is important for media to maintain the morals of the society; they must not show smething which damages the moral, cultural, social fabric of the society.

Media can be used as the most effective brainwashing tool, so it’s important that media remains careful of that and define things in such a way that people are leave choosing on their own rather than compelled to believe something which is not constructive for them for example if smoking is bad for health, media must not show lucrative cigarette ads.

The media must act in the way that the society must remain independent to form its own opinion and media must respect the social values of the society.

Examples of biased journalism

umer cheema’s tweet indicates how Pakistani journalists become biased and indicate it by expressing sarcasm, while it is important for them to remain neutral and free from political involvement

following tweet shows how jasmeen manzoor has been campaigning anti MQM biasness, she openly express her will of MQM’s leader Altaf Hussain getting arrested by Scotland Yard police in imran farooq’s murder case.

Roznama Dunya

the above Rauf Klasra’s article tells how MQM is behind the murder of its own veteran leader Imran Farooq’s murder. It is important for a journalist to give the correct information to its readers and not make a controversy out of it by making up one’s own theory which is not backed up with concrete proofs. As for now, the ex interior minister Rehman Malik has categorally denied capturing any killers mentioned in the above article, even if they are apprehended it is not established that they belong to a specific party.

It is important for a journalist to not concoct stories and give the correct information to its readers unsullied by one’s political biasness

Misperception of MQM and its militant hold on the media:

Several accusations are hurled on MQM of controlling the media through the point of a gun

I would like to go at those accusations one by one

1) MQM attacked Aaj tv after 12 may attacks for broadcasting MQM guys firing with their weapons

2) MQM is accused of threatening journalists like Jasmeen Manzoor

3) MQM is accused of killing Wali Babar

4) MQM is accused for suppressing people of Karachi of not openly expressing their view point

5) MQM is accused of kidnapping AK Chishti and torturing him(accused by Najam Sethi in his program Aapas ki Baat)

And few more points which i would like to discuss regarding

1) MQM and its relations with the media and journalists

2) MQM social media team

3) MQM code of conduct regarding appearance on the media

4) What is a lifafa MQM journalist

5) MQM view on unbiased journalism

6) MQM and combating politically backed local and foreign media

MQM accusations regarding Aaj TV attack on 12th may 2007

Aaj TV, a Pakistani NEWS channel showed footage of some MQM activists firing weapons on the business recorder road which was then widely televised in entire Pakistan as a conspiracy to create anti MQM sentiments.

The background of the incident as was then cleared by the footage which MQM later released by the name of ‘Bitter Truth’

Bitter truth

the video shows what actually occurred on the afternoon of business recorder road near Gurumander.

What Aaj TV never showed is the beginning of the incident and never even bothered to make public know what happened when AAJ TV and its typical media propaganda misguided entire nation when they shoke the half truth

In the video ‘Bitter Truth’ it is shown that MQM peaceful rallyconsisting of innocent women, old people and children was passing through the business recorder road where AaJ TV, a subsidiary of business recorder news paper was located when few miscreants indiscriminately opened fire, it can be see people running away from the rally to take shelter from those stray fires which terrorists used to create situation of panic and anarchy. AAJ TV never told this truth but from the point when the retaliation started occurring to repel those terrorists when some MQM activists opened fire on them

Later on AAJ TV biased propaganda became clear when they started shouting that MQM men had attacked their offices

Attack on AAJ TV footage

MQM attack on Aaj TV on 12 May Part 2 - YouTube

in the footage it is clear that few miscreants are attacking the parking lot and burning vehicles, while the AAJ TV crew is safely making that footage from the distance, you can see the miscreants not moving towards them

the following video shows MQM’s Haider Abbas Rizvi and anchor admitting the fact that broadcaster’s association investigative report tells there was no attack on AAJ TV

Proof:: MQM Is Not Involved In 12th May Attack On Aaj Tv - YouTube

2) MQM is accused of threatening journalists like Jasmeen Manzoor

Jasmeen manzoor alleges that she has the audio tapes that few people belonging to MQM had threatened her for life. No audio tapes she has come forward with so far

She also admits in the program that up till then she had excellent relations with MQM also

3) MQM accused of killing wali babar

Like many journalists MQM had excellent relations with Wali Babar. This was admitted by Hauder rizvi of MQM in one talk show who also exposed his real killers

Capital Talk - 17th Jan. 2011 - who Killed Wali Khan Baber? - YouTube

4) MQM is accused for suppressing people of Karachi of not openly expressing their view point

Through media propaganda, it is given a perception that MQM controls Karachi through its mighty power and Karachiites can’t express their opinions openly, the following videos clear this perception

Part-1 SAMAA Hum Loug Ali Mumtaz with Waseem Akhtar (14 Feb 2014) - Video Dailymotion

Express To The Point (23 April 2013) Elections and MQM with MQM Senator Mustafa Kamal - YouTube

the following video clearly shows MQM doesn’t stop public to openly express their opinions on public forums

5) MQM is accused of kidnapping AK Chishti and torturing him(accused by Najam Sethi in his program Aapas ki Baat)

In his program, Najam Sethi claimed that MQM was behind the attack of the journalist AK Chisti

"MQM beat up AK Chishti and Karachi Police is a proxy of MQM" - Najam Sethi's - YouTube

the various biased journalists claimed openly without proof and evidence on MQM that AK Chishti was beaten up by police, proxy of MQM.

Few media journalists tried to mislead people by blatant lies for example

AK Chishti himself refuted those comments by hinting LEAs behind his torture

AK Chishti is a journalist who has wrote about LEAs killing MQM’s leader Azeem Ahmed Tariq, previously blamed on MQM itself
