Pakistan 189 for 6 (Rizwan 74*, Ashraf 30, Hendricks 3-32, Shamsi 2-29) beat South Africa 188 for 6 (Markram 51, Klaasen 50, van Biljon 34, Nawaz 2-21, Hasan 2-28) by four wickets

Pakistan achieved their highest-ever T20I run-chase to take a 1-0 lead against South Africa, sneaking home with a ball to spare. Mohammad Rizwan, whose purple patch shows no signs of receding, was the star man once more, staying unbeaten through the chase and scoring 74 off 50. Little of it looked likely, though, with South Africa well ahead in the game for much of the final stages, but a combination of poor bowling and fielding and brave hitting from Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali saw the win snatched away from the home side at the death. That a heavily depleted South Africa got so close might satisfy Mark Boucher when they reflect upon this game, but for now, this will be a cruel defeat to bear.

South Africa had opted to bat first after winning the toss, flying in the face of history; only twice in six previous games had the side making that decision ended up winning the game. It seemed to be paying off for much of the first innings, with most of the top order stepping up in the absence of the senior players in a big way. Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen set South Africa the perfect platform, storming to 159 for 3 in 16 overs, before wickets from Pakistan pulled them back at the death.

South Africa didn't allow Pakistan to get off to a flyer in the Powerplay, but a 20-run over from debutant Sisanda Magala got them going. While Babar Azam fell soon after, Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman were in full flow. Zaman smashed three consecutive boundaries off George Linde to keep the asking rate in check, but when Tabraiz Shamsi removed him, things began to get tight.

Wickets continued to fall and Pakistan looked to have lost their way, but the inexperience of the South African side told in the end. A number of the errors they made were unforced, and Pakistan, smelling blood, capitalised. The final run scored was an overthrow, perhaps a fitting exclamation mark to a sloppy finish by the hosts without which, despite the odds against them, they could have taken the series lead.

Pakistan's bowling woes
Pakistan's T20I bowling is by far their strongest suit. But little of that was in evidence today as they turned in a strikingly disappointing performance, one that might have led to an uglier scorecard if Mohammad Nawaz hadn't stood head and shoulders above the rest of his colleagues. Shaheen Afridi struggled to deal with Janneman Malan's belligerence, with the South African apparently set on targeting Pakistan's best bowler, and achieving great success in that endeavour. Usman Qadir, true to legend, bowled worse than he arguably ever has in a Pakistan shirt after having shaved off his flowing locks, while full-tosses and slot deliveries from the quicker bowlers abounded, and were consistently punished.

Pakistan managed to turn this around for most of the final five overs after Klaasen was dismissed, with the number of absences in South Africa's middle order meaning power-hitting was in short supply by that stage. The lines were more accurate, and the men at the other end less capable, allowing Pakistan to rein South Africa in below 200.
Shamsi's heroics
While most of South Africa's best players are at the IPL, they will be very glad to retain the services of the current number-one T20I bowler. Shamsi's spell was perhaps the only time through the chase the hosts were confident they had a master of his craft at work. It was a bewitching period of play, with Shamsi danging one up on a wider line to tempt Fakhar Zaman out, while using the googly to devastating effect. The batsmen always seemed to be kept guessing, and on his watch, the asking rate crept above 12. Mohammad Hafeez's dismissal was a particular highlight, with the batsman hopelessly unaware of the impending danger as he danced down the tracking without bothering to get to the pitch. The ball spun away, leaving Klaasen with a simple stumping, and Shamsi unfurled that iconic shoe-phone celebration.

The endgame

When Beuran Hendricks removed Haider Ali and Mohammad Nawaz off successive balls to start the 16th over, the game looked like it had swung decisively. Rizwan and Ashraf allowed Pakistan to hang on for about ten minutes, sneaking in the odd boundary as they took the contest deep. Ironically, though, it was Hendricks' following over that burst the game back open for Pakistan, with Rizwan taking 14 off his first 3 balls to put Pakistan back in control. With 11 required in the final over, South Africa's nerves would get the better of then, with Faheem dropped off the first ball, while the youthful Lizaad Williams missed his lines, allowing Hasan Ali to get six off his first two balls. Needing three off two, Pakistan squeezed in another two, before Williams fumbled a throw from the deep, and Rizwan and Hasan scampered another run to wrap up an unlikely win.

South Africa beat Pakistan by six wickets in the second T20 International of four match series to level series 1-1 in Johannesburg on Monday.

Pakistan set 141-run target for South Africa in the second T20 International after Babar Azam won the toss and opted to bat first.

Pakistan reached a measly 140 for 9, courtesy Babar Azam's 50 off 50 balls and Mohammad Hafeez's 32 off 23. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to score many runs.
In response, South Africa chased the whole score in 14 overs with the lose of 4 wickets and level the series by 1-1.

Earlier, Pakistan pulled off a 4-wicket victory against South Africa in the first T20 International at Johannesburg stadium. Opener Muhammad Rizwan top scored for Pakistan with 74 runs off 50 deliveries.

Fakhar Zaman, Faheem Ashraf hand Pakistan T20I series

Both teams suffered collapses, but South Africa's 145 target proved insufficient in fourth T20I

Pakistan 149 for 7 ( Zaman 60, Nawaz 25*, Magala 2-33) beat South Africa (van der Dussen 52, Ashraf 3-17, Ali 3-40) 144 by three wickets

Pakistan have pulled off back-to-back T20I series wins over South Africa, albeit not a team with their first-choice personnel at their disposal, and capped off their tour with a 3-1 win thanks to a strong bowling performance and despite a batting wobble. Pakistan made heavy work of chasing 145, and after coasting on 92 for 1 lost 6 for 37 to put South Africa on the brink of a series-levelling coup.

That might have been more than what South Africa deserved after an under-par batting effort. Only three times in the 77 T20Is in which South Africa have batted first, have they been bowled out for fewer runs as the middle-order collapsed. Shaheen Shah Afridi had his best performance of the series, with a return of 1 for 19 in his four overs, after conceding at more than ten for the first three matches while Hasan Ali and Faheem Ashraf took three apiece to stall any acceleration attempts.

After Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman put Pakistan on track for a comfortable win, Lizaad Williams removed them both and Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo squeezed Pakistan but South Africa could not hold their nerve at the end. It's an age-old problem which they will want to confront as they slumped to a fifth successive series T20I defeat.

Safe hands, finally

Neither team had a fielding effort worthy of this series' highlights reels with four dropped catches on each side but Pakistan pulled off a flawless display in this match and took all eight chances they got in this match.

It started when Fakhar Zaman intercepted Janneman Malan's aerial drive at head height to take the catch to his right and put the brakes on a South African innings that was ticking along at eight an over. That was the most difficult of the opportunities Pakistan got with the others fairly straightforward skied chances, though they still took some judgement. Zaman took another good catch at sweeper cover, and avoided a collision with Ashraf to end Sisanda Magala's knock and Mohammad Rizwan dived full-length to his left to hold on to an Andile Phehlukwayo outside edge.

South Africa didn't do too badly either and held on to six chances. Their best effort was Shamsi's running catch at deep third to get rid of Azam and put South Africa in a position to push for a win.
Middle-over blues
South Africa went into this match a batter short after opting to bench Pite van Biljon in favour of a third allrounder and it backfired badly. After the openers were dismissed, they needed at least one of Klaasen or van der Dussen to bat through to avoid exposing a soft middle, but exactly the opposite happened. Klaasen and van der Dussen were dismissed in the space of five balls, failing to make proper contact on attempted big strokes, which sparked a collapse of 5 for 13 in 20 balls. Linde and Mulder both looked as though they were batting a position too high and Phehlukwayo's death-hitting amounted to one attempted to drive on the up. After scoring 100 runs in the first 12 overs, South Africa managed just 44 runs in their last 8, to finish well under-par.
Rizwan's run ends
After Mohammad Rizwan stalked them all summer, South Africa would have been thrilled to see the back of him for a second duck in the series. Given his form, you can hardly blame Rizwan for stepping out of his crease to take on Bjorn Fortuin in the first over, but he overbalanced and missed his flick, allowing Heinrich Klaasen to pull off a stumping down the leg side. The last time South Africa dismissed Rizwan early, they cantered to victory but, with a low total to defend, they could not repeat that feat.
Batting beyond Babar
Pakistan's middle order have been largely untested on this tour and proved more fragile than they would like. After Zaman and Azam were dismissed in the same over by Williams, Pakistan had to rely on their most experienced batter Mohammad Hafeez and promising youngster Haidar Ali to take them through the second half of the innings. Haidar flicked a full Phehlukwayo delivery to deep square leg and Hafeez slog-swept Shamsi to long-on, to leave it up to the lower-order. Then Asif Ali was hurried by a Magala bouncer and popped him a simple return chance. Pakistan lost 4 for 17 in 37 balls which made what should have been a straightforward chase much more complicated. They needed 25 runs off the final 18 balls and six off the last over and got there with a ball to spare.

Faheem Ashraf took three for 17 to spark South Africa's collapse in the fourth Twenty20 at Centurion, April 16.

Pakistan beat South Africa by three wickets with one ball to spare in the fourth and final Twenty20 international at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

It clinched a 3-1 series win for the tourists.

Pakistan seemed to be cruising when they reached 92 for one in the 10th over after bowling out South Africa for 144 on what is usually a high-scoring ground.

But six wickets fell for 27 runs after Fakhar Zaman was out for a hard-hit 60 off 34 balls before Mohammad Nawaz sealed the win with a six off the penultimate ball.

Pakistan's 3-1 series win completed a clean sweep of four successful series against South Africa during the season.

They won a Test and T20 series in Pakistan and a one-day and T20 series in South Africa.

Brief scores

South Africa: 144 in 19.3 overs (H. van der Dussen 52, J. Malan 33; Faheem Ashraf 3-17)

Pakistan: 149-7 in 19.5 overs (Fakhar Zaman 60; S. Magala 2-33).

Result: Pakistan won by three wickets
Earlier, Pakistan medium-pace bowler Faheem Ashraf sparked a South African collapse.

Ashraf took three for 17 as South Africa, who were put into bat after losing the toss, were bowled out for 144.

South Africa had reached 73 for one after the early loss of Aiden Markram when Ashraf had Janneman Malan caught at mid-off for 33 in the ninth over.

Ashraf followed up with the wickets of South African captain Heinrich Klaasen and George Linde. He bowled his four overs in succession and did not concede a boundary.

Fast bowlers Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf took three for 40 and two for 18, respectively.

Rassie van der Dussen top-scored for South Africa with 52 off 36 balls.

Pakistan chased down a target of 204 with nine wickets and two overs to spare on the same ground two days earlier.

Captain Babar Azam, who scored 122 in that run chase, named an unchanged side while South Africa made two changes.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder and left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin came into the side, replacing batsman Pite van Biljon and left-arm fast bowler Beuran Hendricks.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. South African captain Klaasen had said he would have preferred to bowl. “It looks a good wicket again,” he said.
