‘Is this the Bangladesh envisioned by Bangabandhu?’

Questions Dr Kamal

Staff Correspondent

Jatiya Oikyafront convener and Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday called upon people to get united like 1971 Liberation War to get rid of those who are destroying democracy.

“We will be able to get rid of those who are destroying democracy and are involved in corruption, if 16 crore people get united like the seven crore, who earned independence through their unity in 1971,” Dr Kamal said.

He was addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.

Krishok Sramik Janata League organised the programme to mark 44th anniversary of the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Dr Kamal, one of the architects of the country’s constitution, said, “We will have to get united to reap the harvest of independence, like we had earned independence through unity of people,” calling upon people to “forge unity” in every village and upazila.

He said there is no alternative to following the ideals and principles of Bangabandhu.

The noted jurist said: “The government is trying to say this is Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh. But people don’t believe it. People are not accepting the government’s lie at all.”

He said Bangabandhu’s dream was that people would be the owner of the country. “But did we get that Bangladesh dreamt by Bangabandhu?”

Dr Kamal said what is happening in the country -- including killing, rape, and oppression on women -- are contradictory to the ideals of Bangabandhu.

“The only way to get rid of the situation is people’s unity,” he added.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President ASM Abdur Rob, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, former state minister for foreign affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury, also spoke at the programme. KSJL President Kader Siddique presided over by the discussion.
