Iran dairy firm hopes to break ice cream record
An Iranian dairy company unveiled a five-ton tub of chocolate ice cream in Tehran on Monday in a bid to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The company, Choopan, put the giant tub, which is more than two metres (6.5 feet) wide and 1.60 metres (5.2 feet) tall on display at a ski resort in the foothills of Tochal, just north of the capital, where over 10,000 people came to see it.
"We finished making the ice cream on Sunday, and it took us eight hours to fill the tub," Khashayar Baheri, CEO of Choopan told AFP.
"We recorded exactly how we made the ice cream and we will give all the documents to Guinness as evidence to support our attempt," he added.
Representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records did witness the record attempt in Tehran, but could not speak to the media for "security reasons," Baheri said.
The current record is held by American ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins after they made a tub of vanilla ice cream weighing 4.02 tonnes (8,865 pounds) in September 2005.
The dairy company Choopan, Farsi for shepherd, was founded in 1991 near Tehran, but only launched its line of ice creams last year.
The company's management said that it is among the top three dairy producers in the country, and that it also exports to the Gulf and the Middle East, and has made plans to break into the Russian market.
