Indian Navy to induct Boeing P-8I this year

Panaji: The Indian Navy is all set to induct a Boeing P-8I into its force this year, making it the second navy after the US to have such aircrafts, a senior naval official said.

The first long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, P-8I, would be inducted this year, the official said.

"The Indian Navy would be only the second operator of this aircraft after US Navy to operate the P8 Poseidon," he said adding that with the Russian-made TU 142M aircrafts, Boeing P-8Is were contracted in the year 2009.

"These inductions would augment the long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy," he added.

Induction of multi role helicopters (MRH) as replacement for Seaking 42As has also been planned, the official said.

"Naval utility helicopters as replacements for Chetak helicopters are also planned for induction in the near future," he added.

According to the press release issued by the navy, these helicopters would serve to enhance the fleet's integral air anti-submarine warfare capability and meet utility requirements.

The naval air arm has grown from a modest force to a small air force and today, has in its inventory approximately 220 aircrafts, 1300 officers and 9000 men.

In yet another major achievement, navy's light combat aircraft is presently under development and being progressed towards ski-jump trials at the shore-based test facility being developed at Goa, the release said.

Sadly we don't have these SLAM-ER missiles, but only general Harpoons. They would have dramatically increased the strike capability.

"Yet", the IN doesn't have these "yet" there is scope to get these down the line @sancho

Depends on export approval of the US government. If we had the possibility, I highly doubt IN would have missed the chance, especially since it don't get any air launched Brahmos until the light version is developed.
Not sure if that config is possible (couldn't find a weapon loadout yet), but think about it, a P8i loaded with:

4 x SLAM-ER on the wingstations (around 250Km range)
3 x JSOW on 3 internal stations (around 130Km range)
3 x SDB quadpacks 2 on internal stations, 1 on the fuselage station (around 100Km range)

A total load of 19 x stand off weapons, be it in coastal attack, or even SEAD alongside our land borderlines.

A nice dream but the IN has bought these machines as MPAs first and foremost, coastal attack and SEAD do not seem to be in their remit just yet.

But i think KSA and Turkey is using SLAM-ER. So in future we will also get it. i hope so.

Turkey and KSA are far closer to the US historically and have, no doubt, signed many of the deals India refuses to sign,to this day, with the US.

Hey dude Any how we are going to buy this for our Rafales. Why not we try to integrate it into P 8I. Is that possible politically dude. Because technically its possible. What's your opinion buddy.

Again, it depends on the US and how accommodating they are willing to be to Indian requests. I wonder if they would seriously okay such integration of the SCALP when it would have a detrimental affect on the potential sales to India of their own, similar, weapons. Of course the P-8I has many Indian-origin and specific components but the leap to Indian-specific weaponary from a 3rd party may be a step too far for the US. If they did okay such a move then the door to the "Bhramos-lite" for the P-8I could be opened surely.

ya if they do approve, it's gonna kick a hornet's nest with every country with it's specific demand ! guess slam-er is more feasible than that !

This is a anti sub plane. Why put a land attack missile on a anti-sub platform??????

That's not a ASW plane. That's Multirole maritime patrol aircraft. One of its duty only ASW and also it will carry ASuW role,AShW role, reconnaissanceetc.,

KSA definitely not, Israel will have something against that, but S. Korea has ordered it too and just like Turkey, they are under the control of the US, we aren't and that might be the issue so far. That's why I always say, on time delivery of C130 or C17 is nice and good, but as long as they don't provide us the top notch things, that really make a difference, they will remain a bad choice. See MMRCA where the US fighters had only JSOW on offer, while Rafale, EF and "possibly" even Gripen were offered with real cruise missiles for long range strike attacks. Same reaons why the UAE prefers M2K-9s over other US fighters, since they have Scalp versions for deep strikes.

They won't allow to integrate any other weapon system into the P8, if at all Israeli PGMs maybe, but even that is doubtful, let alone Indian or even anything with Russian involvement (not to mention that Russian won't allow the integration of Brahmos into a US aircraft either).

Because it's not only an anti sub plane, but a maritime patrol aircraft mainly for surveillance, with surface vessel and submarine attack capability. That's why we get Harpoons and SLAM-ER is a modernised more capable version of that missile, just like JSOW can be used against naval vessels too, but it's not an unimportant benefit that they could be used against land targets too.
