Why can't we order the same from an Indian supplier like Mahindra & Mahindra and TATA? I heard they're into this now. Why do our leaders have to go for foreign maal all the time?

Thanks, I was actually responding to Tshering22 for saying we should have sourced it from an Indian company.

Sorry guys. I though it was the Czech manufacturer we were talking about.

Everyone is partly correct.

TATRA is a Czech military truck manufacturer and this is license produced by BEML in India

BEML is Asia's second-largest manufacturer of earth moving equipment, and it controls 70% of India's market in that sector.

^^^ TATRAs have been in service with the Indian Army since the 70s when they were imported from the Czech Republic as Tank Transporter Tractors. If i'm not mistaken they replaced ANTARs in that role though some KAMAZs were also in use. Since that time, TOT took place and a production line was established at BEML. The TATRAs have undergone some improvements/modifications since then, though cosmetically there are little changes. Another thing, TATRA dumpers are now popular in the civilian world in the mining industry. In the late 60s, BEML had set up a production line for KOMATSU (Japanese) Dozers, initially for the Indian Army, later for civilians as well. Another fact of some interest; at the same time as the TATRAs came, the Armoured Corps. got wheeled APCs like the BTR-60s and the SKOTs (6x6). They have long gone, while the TATRA remains. But those APCs were the nucleus around which the Mechanised Infantry forces were set up.

In that case, my first comment is correct. Why consider license manufacture and paying royalty to a foreign company when our own companies have jumped into this division.
