India: Media Freedom Under Threat, Suppression of Critics

Look at the questionnaire of RSF which determines press freedom. It is about 9 pages of fairly easy read. Our societies will not be able to score well on those criteria for a very long time, esp in social media age. BJP or Congress or Communists, doesn't matter.

@Faqirze

It is a bit naive to expect that absolute press freedom will ever be possible in the 3rd world. It is tempting to blame the government for everything, but the fact is that people themselves are not very responsible when it comes to being trigger happy as far as forwarded content is concerned. We as a society are dramatic and like to believe scripted nonsense, which we will as easily share. Combine this with deep fakes, and truth becomes a casualty.

You have people in Pakistan, and on this very forum who absolutely despise people they call 'liberals'.
You're right, but at least in Pakistan one can simply point out the fact that our country is indeed developing and a 3rd world shithole without being brigaded with vile death and rape threats and being called "anti nationalistic" or told to go to Afghanistan. According to Indian nationalists, their country is a hyper- galactic 1st world superpower and anyone who thinks otherwise is either a Pakistani or jealous that they don't have the "pleasure" of living in such a beautiful and civilized country like India is. You have people in Pakistan openly criticize and bash how our society is run and call out how fanatic and messed up our country is, nothing happens to them.

I will acknowledge that Pakistanis are more accepting of criticism of their country than Indians are. Having said that, you have probably not interacted with Indians in their own circles. We are forever cribbing about everyone, from Municipality to Central government. Our own Facebook groups are full of jokes and sarcasm about various layers of governments. What complicates matters is religion. When a Muslim or Christian in the group criticises the government, one is quick to attribute ulterior motives. This is what I don't like.

About being superpower and all the crap, trust me, most people do not believe that shit. When poked and triggered, people will say anything, but are what we are. If we are living in a fancy mansion in Goa, life seems blissful, if we are living in a shared one bedroom apartment travelling in crowded local trains, life seems like shit. No amount of super power chooran is going to whitewash the daily experiences. So no, we don't believe we are super power or anything. Just that we have had enough of people constantly telling us we are a shit hole. We are bits of everything, but whole of India is not a shit hole.

I understand that it feels very bad to have your country mocked and be called all kinds of vile names from others, but truth hurts sometimes. I personally have accepted the fact when it comes to Pakistan, most people around the world view Pakistan as a typical Islamic shithole, and I totally agree with them and have come to accept the fact. Acceptance is the 1st step to recovery like they say, denying the problems instead of accepting it does more harm then good and gets one nowhere. I feel like the problem is that you lot deal with criticism in a very wrong way, if you channeled that anger into something more productive for your country it would do wonders.

It is exactly the same here. Both Pak and Ind have some ultranationalists-religionists. They think the same way. There is also no shortage of people openly bashing the way this place is run and so on.

India currently (2022) ranks 150th in the press freedom index:

https://rsf.org/en/index

This may be slightly better than Pakistan and much better than China, but it is nothing to be proud of.
Press freedom is only possible when some basic qualifications are set for press people and some sort of checks enabled on duplicity lying bribery and story making by so called journos and press people. Otherwise a majority of them simply use Press credentials as license to broadcast their pet peeves projects and prejudices.

Press freedom is therefore dead because press people killed it. Globally.

The rankings are global! If it is dead globally, then India wouldn't languish so far down, would it?

How do you think 149 other countries manage to have better freedom of the press than India does? What "basic qualifications" do they have that India doesn't?

Only if populations, diversity, geographic neighborhoods, near term empowwrment history are all equal and equally distributed- will your argument about 'it is still global' hold.

Lacking standards and reasonable bars for qualifying press and journalism, freedom actually works in disconcert to quality. Politics having become refuge of rascals, press becomes refuse of less competent politicians !
