Kathmandu, Aug 13 (PTI) India has gifted 109 vehicles to Nepal Army under a defence pact as a high level Indian army delegation visited the country to hold discussions with top Nepalese brass.

The vehicles were brought to Kathmandu via Sunauli entry point on Friday, according to the Nepal Army sources.

These vehicles include 30 trucks of 7 tonne capacity, 20 trucks of 2.5 tonne capacity, 24 mine protected vehicles and 35 military jeeps. The vehicles were handed over to the Butawal-based Brigad No 22 of the Nepal Army, according to the Army Headquarters sources.

The vehicles were handed over as part of the continued assistance being provided by government of India for the last five years and the assistance was provided in line with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Meanwhile, Indian Army''s Lt General DS Thakur, AVSM, who was leading Indian Army''s delegation today concluded a five-day goodwill visit to Nepal.

During the visit, the Indian Army delegation paid a courtesy call at Defence Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudyal, met with Defence Secretary Navin Kumar Ghimire and Chief of Army Staff of Nepal Army Chhatraman Singh Guring in Kathmandu.

The Indian Army team also inspected Army Staff College at Tokha, anti-insurgency training centre and forest warfare institute.

They also attended various programmes organised by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu before leaving Kathmandu today, according to a press release issued by the Nepal Army.

Nice gesture from India. We have to improve relations with Nepal before it is too late

To all members, Indian foreign policy is very limited to only the favoring political party of its neighboring nations (Nepal & Bangaladesh). And when the other parties are in power we loose the good in that nation. Don’t you think that we need to change it and keep good relations to at least 3 major parties of the nation? By this we will enjoy the goodwill among the neighboring nation let whoever be in the power.

i didnet asked for your reply son
Old man, did someone asked U you to troll.....or is it part of or is your duty ?
Is the sole purpose of your existence is - India bashing ?
refrain from posting stupidity.

You are right , but how can U help if the party whose vote depends on being Anti-India e.g Communists in Nepal and BNP in B'desh, is in power.
Do U think Prachanda would have accepted these vehicles ? He would have gone to Chinese...and would not have missed any opportunity to raise anti India sentiments ...as his vote and stay in power depends upon this..

How to deal with it..? educate the people who form the vote banks of these parties.. This is where soft power helps.

Excellent! We need to tighten our ties with Nepal even more. And while China uses its policy of influencing semi-authoritarian regimes to gain hold in the country while India has to use the technique of influencing people. We need to request Nepal not to allow visa-less entry to countries that are a threat to India. Since we are militarily rising, we need to ensure that Nepali military is also well equipped.

After the blunder UPA-1 did, there is still time to mend the political blunders and increase our friendship with Nepal.

off topic : prachanda lost because of his insistence in admitting the rebel people into army. That was just plain non sense and India made good use of it.

Nevertheless, Nepal needs this token of good will gesture and was long over due.

That was a good gesture on part of India. However, It is even better to have good relationship with your neighbours and give them due respect. Giving objects that will rust away after few years is not as desirable as treating smaller nations in the neighbourhood with respect that is due to sovereign nations. India has a track record of pushing its weight around on smaller nations in South Asia and this is resented by these smaller nations.

FYI, Indian Army has an entire batallion of soldiers from Nepal. If Nepalese felt they are not respected they would have never joined IA.
