US military confirms death of al Qaeda commander
BY BILL ROGGIO | March 26th, 2017 | admin@longwarjournal.org | @billroggio
The US military confirmed that it killed Qari Yasin, the al Qaeda commander who was targeted in an airstrike in Paktika province, Afghanistan, on March 19. Yasin had decades of experience with jihadist factions operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the US military said he was responsible for the deaths of two US Marines in the Sept. 2008 suicide assault on the Islamabad Marriott Hotel.

Yasin’s death was first reported on March 21. The Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan announced the martyrdom of Yasin one day later, and described him as a “close assistant” and a “trainer of Mujahideen.” [For a profile of Yasin, see FDD’s Long War Journal Journal report, Al Qaeda commander believed to be killed in US airstrike.]

The US military described Yasin as “a well-known al Qaeda terrorist leader responsible for the deaths of dozens of innocent victims, including two American service members” who “had ties to Tehrik-e Taliban [Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan] and had plotted multiple al Qaeda terror attacks …”

The US military also confirmed that Yasin was killed on March 19 in a “counter-terrorism airstrike” in Paktika province. According to reports from the region, Yasin was killed in the district of Barmal, which is a known safe haven for al Qaeda and a host of jihadist groups in the region.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A US drone attack on a car killed an Al Qaeda ‘commander’, a Taliban trainer and two other militants in Afghanistan’s Paktika province near the border with Pakistan.

Security sources told Dawn on Monday that the US fired two missiles at the car in the Laman area, killing the four militants.

The sources said Qari Yasin, alias Ustad Aslam, hailing from Lodhran in Punjab was considered one of the most important commanders of the local chapter of Al Qaeda.

The other ‘commander’ killed in the attack was identified as Ameen Shah Mahsud of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

He is said to be a TTP trainer of suicide bombers.

A large number of tribesmen displaced from North Waziristan have relocated to the Laman area of Paktika province along the border with South Waziristan.

Our Bahawalpur Correspondent adds: Qari Yasin carried a head money of Rs5 million, a spokesman for the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) said.

The spokesman told Dawn that Qari Yasin was a proclaimed offender and his name was included in the CTD’s Red Book.

He said Yasin had been involved in several high-profile terrorist attacks, including the assassination attempt on former president Gen Pervez Musharraf, attack on the GHQ, attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team and a bomb blast at Data Darbar in Lahore.

How many more TTP commanders are we gonna have to wait on the USA to kill?

So many high profile terrorists are hiding in Afghanistan.

Indian active use of Afghanistan as launch pad for terrorism in Pakistan must be condemned and should be diplomatically highlighted everywhere!
