When I visited IDEAS in 2018 there were few private Pakistani companies present there who were making some seriously good stuff. For example cavalier group which is making Hamza APC and Interceptor. They also make seriously good helmets and Bulletproof vests.

Military Leadership and planners seriously needs to open their minds and encourage these groups by buying their products in large numbers. Also Police should be asked to buy from them. Another good Bullet Proof vest and helmet and protections shield makers are Lyra. And few other companies are also doing good stuff. By encouraging them and buying their products in large numbers it would also encourage big private guys like NISHAT group and others to enter defence sector.

There was another group I don't know its name but they basically armor company which turn cars into bullet proof vehicles. They have good technology through which they turned Muhafiz vehicles used by Sindh Police into really strong armed beasts.

@Suff Shikan You could help by posting pictures you took

This is the work of some private company based in Karachi. After crap Muhafiz was badly exposed it Lyari operation this company came forward and did additional protection on Muhafiz.

All of these are imported products which private companies were showcasing on behalf of foreign companies as joint venture. In reality these companies didnt put even a shred of effort in local R & D and just wanted to sell foreign products.

An excellent thread. I have been saying this for years, let’s hope that people will pay attention this time. It will be a multi billion dollar industry in Pakistan.

Right, Its never too late, how long we will keep spending Billions of Dollars on foriegn weaponry.. Turkey is example for us.

It depends whether spending on foreign weaponry is cheaper than manufacturing it at home. Only way you can reduce per unit cost is by achieving economy of scale which is simply impossible for a country like Pakistan. Even our Alkhalid Tanks being produced locally are still expensive than getting them directly from china. Also there is a matter of spending billions on R&D to manufacture critical components like engines. For now we have several off the shelf options but that doesn't mean if funds become available we wont be pursuing local manufacturing of critical parts. Pakistan currently is still not proficient in field of design and development so that is the first hurdle we need to pass in order to proceed toward more ambitious goals.

not all local companies are importing stuff... how can they stay in business by just importing stuff and without any long term development plans?
Government need to encourage startup and local defense companies to invest in R&D and build it in Pakistan.

R & D in defense industry is a very expensive endeavor. First we need to initiate R&D at HIT, POF, PAC then we can move down further toward private sector and tasks can be delegated to them. Our R & D even at government level is at it infancy so no private company would invest billions without a proper base.

Pakistani private sector need to do a joint venture with Indonesian, Malaysian, Brazil and Turkish companies. There are many smaller companies who would love to do a joint venture and save money on R&D.
for example,
Indonesia: Pindad and PT PAL Indonesia
Malaysia: DefTech and Weststar Defence
Brazil: Avibras
