* COAS says Pakistan, Sri Lanka have proved to be committed partners in face of challenges for preserving peace in region

COLOMBO: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has said Pakistan earnestly desires regional stability based on a balance of power that promotes respect for each other’s sovereignty and discourages any form of quest for dominance and hegemony.

Speaking at the passing out parade of Sri Lanka Military Academy here on Saturday, General Kayani said Pakistan and Sri Lanka are both peace-loving countries and regardless of internal and external challenges, their armed forces persistently seek peace within the region and beyond. He pointed out that it is an established fact that armed forces draw their inspiration from respective national ethos and sentiments.

The COAS said during this entire period of approximately three decades of conflict and the ensuing rebuilding phase, Pakistan always stood by and wholeheartedly supported the Sri Lankan nation and its armed forces, both in moral as well as material realm.

“Pakistan has proved to be a true friend of Sri Lanka in your hour of need. I believe this provides a very strong foundation for a sincere friendship and genuine goodwill that exists between our two nations and armed forces,” he said.

“Sri Lanka and Pakistan have enjoyed the highest degree of mutual trust and cooperation and have proved as committed partners in the face of challenges for the larger cause of preserving peace in our respective countries and the region at large. This trust and collaboration would further strengthen in the times ahead. Pakistan Army would continue to support Sri Lankan Army in its pursuit of excellence,” said General Kayani. inp

Yes, but will the message be heard? Indian friends are convinced Pakistan is dead and it's only the certificate that they are waiting on - For Mr. Kiyani it's not words, but deeds that count, so long as he tolerates the dismantling of Pakistan and tell the citizenry to call the police and that it's not the army's responsibility, he's not likely to be taken seriously, something ironically, most Pakistanis should be thankful for.

When Pakistan dismantles, then I'll take your words seriously. Until then I will remain skeptical and support Kayani's sensible decisions.

It wont be possible without the the strongest country in the region(India) to take part and work with other countries. But it is a start, if the smaller countries all start working together.

We are ready to do it,but plz stop sending armed gunmen from accross the border to slaughter civilians over here.Mr kayani asks everyone to respect each others sovereignity and so on and on..but does nothing to rein in his own subordinates from pulling these stunts, can he truly believe mutual respect and peace and mumbai style attacks go hand in hand.If so then he is delusional.First kargil, then parliament, then mumbai.Munh main ram ram, bagal mein chori mr kayani.

We are not responsible for your insecurities. If the smaller countries in the subcontinent feel paranoid just because India is united and strong, its their problem. Learn to deal with it..

Well that is the problem here. It is a cycle, India meddled in our affair when it helped the bengalis in 1971. Then we helped the sikhs in 1980's and the Kashmiris in later 1980s-1990s, then you all helped the BLA in Balochistan. It is reciprocal. It will be a waste to argue that we have not done anything which most indians like to think, but in reality india is not so innocent. Instead of dealing with issues we have hurt each other a lot.
I do not suggest that we need india to be our friends, but atleast we can live peacefully in future for that to happen, sacrifices will have to be made from both sides. But as we are all stubborn this game of terrorism will continue on.

The military and intelligence leadership of both nations have grown increasingly paranoid and hell bent on destroying each other. That is the truth.

We all want peace. But there will be another Indo-Pak war in our lifetimes sadly.

Just to add for the record :

The Cycle began backin 47 - 48 when Pak Army disguised as tribals entered J&K followed by Op Gibraltar by Ayub in 65.

India has traditionally torn a page off PA's book of dirty tricks & possibly done a better job of it.

Yes , I agree it should cease.

How can there be "balance of power" with two biggies - China and India - in the region and two islamic (mostly) powers Pakistan and BD?

Lanka's best chance is to play off Pak/Ind/China/BD off each other and follow the Singapore growth model. There is no way SL can have "balance of power" with respect to bigger countries. there is simply no depth for SL.

What is his proposal in achieving regional stability based on a balance of power?

2009 Sino-Pak collaboration & support to Sri lanka in terms of both moral & material, = "LTTE" being wiped out ( which started off as an "external" "response" to Sri lanka cozing up to the U.S back in the 80's), while @ the same time paving the way for the ever growing influence of China in Sri lanka & now even Maldives , Chinese foot mark in the Indian Ocean region = "Hambantota" this is what is called
"Regional balance of Power"

What is his proposal in achieving regional stability based on a balance of power?

To get in China to balance out India. One more face palm moment awaiting - it seems they never learn from past mistakes like bringing in petro dollars and the Americans and look how it f@cked up the region. Bringing in foreign entities against - though uncomfortable for the targeted country, does not bode well for the local bed fellows when they walk all over you after a while.

What is his proposal in achieving regional stability based on a balance of power?
