Experts at a conference on the economic potential of the gaming industry in Pakistan said on Tuesday that the industry could generate annual revenue of up to $400 million if ease of business was ensured.

The conference was organised in Islamabad by Pakistan Software Houses Association (PASHA) and Tencent Games. Government officials, gaming studios, game developers, entrepreneurs, freelancers and telecom operators attended the event.

According to a press release issued afterwards, panelists discussed the current status of Pakistan’s gaming industry and the challenges it needed to overcome to grow sustainably in the coming years.

Tencent’s Senior Director for Public Affairs Lih Shiun noted that the IT sector was actively involved in the gaming industry and is “well-poised to capture the immense opportunities the global video games industry brings”.

Shiun further pointed out that the gaming sector did not only have a direct impact through job creation and economic output, but it also provided secondary value via e-sports and other digital competitions.

“With video game-related technologies increasingly being used in other sectors and areas such as industrial design and cultural heritage promotion and protection, you can see how much potential there is for Pakistan’s video gaming sector,” he said.

Meanwhile, PASHA Chairman Badar Khushnood said that the gaming industry could spur economic growth in Pakistan if it was supported with the right policies, adding that the country “potentially has access to a $90 billion mobile gaming industry alone”.
He said unofficial estimates showed Pakistanis had spent $260m so far on video games.

“Game-makers in Pakistan typically produce mobile games for a global audience. If supported with the right policies, the gaming sector can spur economic growth in Pakistan,” he said.

All gaming apps and software developers must be encouraged and be supported as long as it doesn't involves anything to do with gambling in any shape or form.

Well. I don’t know what it’s like in Pakistan, but in India “gaming industry” typically translates as gambling. Most online platforms are skirt around gambling restrictions by classifying themselves as “skills based game” and calling themselves “behavioural sciences company”.

I think it would be pretty much the same across the Indian sub-continent region. Only domestic gaming companies I’ve seen scale are gambling firms.

Gambling is a home destroyer and considering our societies where lack of education plus other factors will do untold damage on our family system.

It is quite possible that with improved business conditions, the gambling industry could generate as much as $400 million in annual revenues.

It is quite possible that with improved business conditions, the gambling industry could generate as much as $400 million in annual revenues. However, it is important to note that this estimate depends on many factors, including the size and growth of the gaming industry, the availability of resources and infrastructure to support it, and the level of investment and competition in the market. Overall, while the gaming industry has the potential to generate significant revenues if simplified, it is important to approach this market with caution and prioritize consumer welfare and the public interest. Pakistan gamer Arslan “Ash” Siddique won the Tekken 7 competition at EVO Japan 2023 on Sunday after beating South Korea’s Meo-IL.

The Lahore-based player has now won three EVO titles. In 2019, he won the Tekken 7 tournament in Japan as well as the Evolution Championship Series in the United States.

In August last year, he finished third in the EVO 2022 Tekken 7 competition.

On Sunday, Siddique played as Zafina to dominate Meo-IL, who was using Geese Howard, 3-0 in the tournament’s final leg.

The top three winners, including third-placed Rangchu from South Korea, were later awarded cash and additional prizes by Tekken series game director and chief producer Katsuhiro Harada.

According to the website for the tournament, EVO is the world’s biggest fighting game tournament with a long history where fighting game players from around the world gather in Las Vegas to compete against each other. It added that EVO Japan is another world championship in the same spirit of the main EVO tournament.

In February, another Pakistani, Atif Butt, emerged as the new “King of the Iron Fist” after winning the Tekken World Tour 2022 videogame tournament in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Butt was a member of the team founded by Ash himself.
