Frankenstein-style human head transplant 'could happen in two years' - Telegraph

The first human head transplant could take place in just two years, it was reported on Thursday.

Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero, from the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, claims the Frankenstein-style procedure to graft a living person’s head on to a donor body will soon be ready.

The breakthrough surgery is being pioneered to help extend the lives of people who have suffered degeneration of the muscles and nerves or those who have advanced cancer.

The New Scientist reported Dr Canavero plans to announce the project at the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons conference in Annapolis, Maryland, in June.

Mr Canavero published a paper on the technique he would use in the Surgical Neurology International journal this month.

The recipient's head and the donor body would be cooled at the start of the procedure to extend the time that cells can survive without oxygen.

Tissue around the neck would be dissected and major blood vessels would be joined using tiny tubes.

The spinal cords would then be cut and the recipient's head moved on to the donor body. The ends of the spinal cord would be fused together using a chemical called polyethylene glycol, which encourages fat within cell membranes to mesh.

After this, the person would be put into a coma for around four weeks to prevent them moving while they heal.

Mr Canavero said he would expect the patient to be able to move and feel their face when they awoke, they would speak with the same voice and they should be able to walk within a year.

Mr Canavero first proposed the idea of the surgery in 2013, but at the time other experts dismissed the idea

He told the New Scientist: "If society doesn't want it, I won't do it. But if people don't want it, in the US or Europe, that doesn't mean it won't be done somewhere else.

"I'm trying to go about this the right way, but before going to the moon, you want to make sure people will follow you."

The first successful head transplant - involving moving the head of one monkey on to another - was carried out in 1970 at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, US.

The monkey lived for nine days, but its immune system rejected the head.

The Lazarus Experiment
In 1930’s, Robert Cornish, a researcher at the University Of California believed he could revive the dead. He suffocated four fox terriers, who he named “Lazarus”, and placed them in a seesaw machine while injecting them with Adrenaline and anticoagulants. The first and second dog remained dead but three and four were revived and lived at his house for months. He was kicked off the Campus for this.

There is a TED talk on human head transplantation, which the doctor claims that he is going to perform. You can check that out

More like a body transplant.

RIP anyways.

.
So which one is going to come to life, the person who's head is being used or the person who's body is being used. o_O

.
Well the two dog heads on 1 body experiment , was done as proof of concept and it worked for a while as both heads , brain etc were active. And the heads attempted to eat as shown in photos.

However later the animals died.

The new experiment is stright forward take the head / brain system from a broken body, and put it onto a healthy body of some dead person

The most common reason for failiure in experiments is that the human body

Rejects , any implanted part. There are functiosn in human body which are smart enough to detect that a particular part is not "natural" to the body that is why the body's defence systems attack the body part effectively destroying it.

If scientist can figure out how to not let body's own defence mechanism to destroy a implanted part then they are making progress

I just read head transplant and i am feeling sick. quite weird for me but morbid curiosity led me to search on net.

That is not exactly the biggest problem. When organs are transplanted, the patients are given drugs to suppress their immune system, and they have to take these drugs for their entire lives...

The biggest problem is joining the spinal cord of new body to head/neck.

. .
I am sure people here would love to see Zardaris head transplanted on a Donkey's Body

Unsuccessfully...

Where the donkey's body rejects zardari's head...

Or the surgeon accidentally drops zardari's head in the toilet commode, $hits on it and then flushes it...

. . .
Is it just me, but I think his is disgusting.

Eventually people gotta die, you can't keep making up more ridiculous interventions to keep some semblance of life,

Life is always terminal, everyone dies eventually. This is so un-natural.

. .
Ah!
Controversial.
But yes they definitely thought it was possible. Sushruta Samhita (book) is a proof.
John hunter and ppl like him were called sorcerers once upon a time. Lol
One cannot develop without understanding one`s origin and its history. There are many things that our sages told us through stories which we took it as god, as deities and all. Let me give you a symbolic meaning of ramayana :
"Ra means radiance, Ma means myself. Rama means ‘the light inside me’. Rama was born to Dasharath and Kousalya. Dasharath means ‘Ten Chariots’. The ten chariots symbolize the five organs of perception (the five senses) and five organs of knowledge and action (For instance: reproduction, legs, hands and so on). Kousalya means ‘skill’. Ayodhya means ‘a society in which there is no violence’. If you skillfully observe what goes on inside the body, light dawns inside you. That is meditation. You need some skill to relax the tension. Then you start expanding.

You know you are here now, yet you are not. With this realization, there is a certain lightness that comes spontaneously. Rama is when the inner light shines through. Sita the mind/intellect was robbed by the ego, Ravana. Ravana had ten heads. Ravana (ego) was one who wouldn’t listen to others. He was too much in the head. Hanuman means breath. With the help of Hanuman (the breath), Sita (the mind) was able to go back to Rama.
It all depend on us humans how we will take it, as a god or as a teaching.

The doctors will have to update the brain firmware with the correct version that was used by the dead body, and also the compatible drivers should be installed before booting up the repaired human
