French Gendarmes in operation

About 150 men of the Gendarmerie were deployed in Afghanistan to train and assist the Afghan Police.
We can see that they are equipped with G36s.

These soldiers are part of the Gendarmerie Nationale (wich is composed about ~100.000),is a brench of the French Armed forces,they are generally in charge of public safety,but they sometimes participe in military operations. (unlike the men of the Police Nationale,they receive a military formation)

They are the paramilitary law enforcement of France. They are a part of the French Armed Forces but under Interior jurisdiction. Kind of internal security troops.

They are under both jurisdiction. (Interior and Defense)

Their Handgun is the Sig Sauer SP 2022. (wich is the standard handgun of the Gendarmerie and the Polic)

Also, my other question is if the whole Gendarmie is French national or is it that France recruits them from all their previous colonies.

This isn't really a para military force,considering the Gendarmerie Nationale as a para military force is incorrect.
