Why is our M2K using this camo ?? Any specific reason .

M2K would have looked better in complete grey camo of IAF .

^^ No idea; wait for more photos and post from Shiv Aroor.

This fighter aircraft is going to be very potent war machine after upgrades

Can anybody tell what's the situation of Mig upgrade program? SMTs...

It's called the UPG standard actually bro. This is an Indian-specific upgrade standard and will be custom and unique to the IAF. The status is that 3 units have been upgraded in Russia and are now in India, the remaining 60+ units will be upgraded by HAL in India and work will be complete by 2016/17.

This is the latest available picture of an UPG example:

You can clearly see the THALES/SAMTAL TOPSIGHT-I HMDS integrated with the bird for the IAF.

I had wondered the same considering every other IAF a/c had adopted the standard IAF grey with the M2Ks being the SOLE exception to this up until now. I had been half-expecting/hoping that once upgraded to -5 MK.2 they'd also get this grey paint job as, IMHO, I think it looks much better and is more suited to the modern age:

Let's wait and see what the final product looks like as this unit isn't completely upgraded as of yet.

Indeed and it will get new radar too?

@sancho > Am I right?

Yes new radar, avionics and weapons are part of the deal, I only wished Dassault would do the whole upgrade, would have saved us a lot of time and money.

You know better than that sir ;) - ToT is the name of the game.

ToT of what? There is nothing the M2K upgrade brings us technically, that wouldn't already be available, even through the LCA development, since both are meant to be of the same generation.

I agree but that is what HAL/industry wanted so that's what happened.

I feel it's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't with Indian military procurements, so many ill-informed people out there all with a platform and voice. If no ToT had been asked for and all the work was done by Dassualt I can just see the media circus that would be created where they would point to deals that DID have ToT and there'd be questions as to why this major deal didn't and why no work was being undertaken in India.

Sod's law really.

Because it's the standard camo for all M2Ks, only the color differed from Air Force to airforce, but that is not a big deal after such a long time in service. Remember our Su 30Ks had a blue color scheme too and we didn't changed that. However, all new fighters will have the same camo, although I find these digital camos, LCH or some fighters had these days quiet interesting.

Yes but that doesn't mean they can't be repainted now in line with the IAF's now standard grey. I mean, the Jags used to look like this:

The IL-76s like this:

And the AN-32s like:

The IAFs upgraded M2Ks can certainly be repainted just like every other legacy IAF a/c has been. The grey on the M2K is just much more relevant and contemporary:
