ISLAMABAD: Owing to a comprehensive strategy of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the Transparency International has put Pakistan at number 126 from 175 under its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) list over the last 20 years.
The NAB under the leadership of Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry has succeeded to create awareness among masses against corruption as well as enforce its anti-corruption strategies to get the society rid of this evil, said a press release issued here on Sunday.
The NAB recovered Rs4 billion during 2014, besides authorising 767 inquiries, investigating 276 cases and filing 152 references in the accountability courts - some of which include cases against ex-prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani in the OGRA corruption case, Ex-PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in the EOBI, RPPS and OGRA corruption cases and other officals.
The NAB has recovered Rs262 billion from 1999 to 2014 since its inception and comparative figures for the latest two years are indicative of the hard work being put in by the institution to fight the menace of corruption.
To create awareness against the ill effects of corruption, the NAB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Higher Education Commission besides putting forward proposals to the PTA, IESCO, NADRA, Passports and Immigration Department, PIA, Pakistan Cricket Team, Pakistan Hockey Team, PEMRA, Pakistan Censor Board, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, LESCO, FESCO and GEPCO to make collaborative efforts to root out corruption from society.
The NAB has also filed six references in the Rs22 billion Modarba scam and so far recovered over Rs1.7 billion from the accused besides making 26 arrests in the case.
