air superiority fighters = mostly dark ,grey coz they are supposed to fly high and that colour must be suitable for all weathers night ,bright day dawn ,dusk etc.. and the local atmospheric colours which depend on the terrain of the land as well

strike aircraft = terrain on which they fly coz they fly low and would want to avoid visual detection by matching the color of the terrain on which it is flying
iaf mig-23 in desert camo

and some others will be used just to make it look attractive for displays like the YELLOW camo on a WHITE BACKGROUND as in the case of su-35 unveiled recently

now there is a new system of camouflaging called digital camouflage
it is mainly used as it is a better away to camouflage vehicles and aircraft and the distinct boundaries between two adjacent colours on the camo scheme on the vehichle or aircraft is more difficult to identify than the older way because it merges with the boundary of the adjacent colour

FINALLY CAMOUFLAGE IS NOTHING BUT OPTICAL ILLUSION

SOME MORE ..but camo is more useful for land warfare as the distance here is much less than air battles and can save more lives too ..but aircrafts can be seen through the radar ,.....

in air combat the canadians are masters of something called a false canopy....

it is very useful in close combat they say ....cause it can confuse an opponent in close fights as to in which direction the plane is going to maneuver ...as you have to out maneuver the opponent ...and a mistake here can result in death ..only useful in gunfights though
