ISLAMABAD: The Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB), in its 96th board meeting here on Wednesday, approved the processing of various coal-based power projects having combined generation capacity of 4,250 megawatts.

Federal Minister of Water and Power Khawaja Mohammad Asif chaired the meeting.

Keeping in view the importance accorded to projects based on domestic resources, the PPIB provided a letter of support for the 100MW Gulpur hydropower project located at Poonch River near Kotli, Azad Kashmir.

“We have received a very encouraging response from the private sector as prominent local and international investors are interested in developing coal-based power projects at locations other than Gadani Power Park as well,” the PPIB said in a press release.

These include Hubco (660MW), Global Benefit Malaysia (660MW), Giga Energy (420MW), Yunus Brothers/Lucky Cement (660MW), Asiapak Hong Kong (two plants of 660MW each), Siddiqsons Group (330MW) and Asia Petroleum (200MW).

These power plants are proposed to be established at different locations including Hub, Port Qasim, Karachi coastal area, Faisalabad, Gharo and Jamshoro.

In addition to these, Sino Sindh Resources along with China Power International as a partner, and Thar Power Company, a joint venture between Engro and Government of Sindh, have expressed interest in developing two projects of 600MW each and two plants of 330MW each respectively in Thar.

The board gave the go-ahead to the processing of these projects after completion of necessary formalities.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister stressed that the government was committed to providing uninterrupted and cheap electricity supply to the people of Pakistan and was working on all avenues to achieve the objective.

He said in order to transmit power from the upcoming independent power projects, the government was inviting the private sector to construct transmission lines. “A policy in this regard is expected to be announced shortly,” he said.

A lot of talk but we will know how many of these will actually come to existence.

Only paper work, nothing practical will happen. Instead we will only see corruption.

Much skepticism here. Whether or not these projects get realised, only time can tell that. Lets wait for a further four years, and reserve our judgement until the next elections.

i sincerely hope that these will be based on local coal or at least a mix of Local + imported coal... the cost of imported coal is rising and will rise in due course time.. these will then become future reasons for circular debt.

Is your name by any chance really asif ijaz?

Nice probably, by next 5-6 years loadshadding will be history. But i am more interested in High tech city, some it hubs , some industrial cities which can change dynamics of the country. And probably some more power to run them as well..

Nooras have many faults.

but

their record is very strong when it comes to completing mega projects.

Now if Uturn Khan takes Uturn on Aug 14, then Nooras may survive for few more years. And if that happens, dams and power plants will be built AND completed.

Quite agree with you. My observation is that almost everybody has faults. I would consider IK the person with least faults, maybe because we haven't tried him out yet, and would rather support him between N and PTI, but the elections are gone now, and its best to focus on development of the country. Although IK is my preference over all, but still i would support the present govt so that stability and development can be ensured. Development is what we need. Thats the aim. Not IK, or any other person. They are the key to achieving that aim. And if the Noons are doing that, better we support them in rebuilding of our country.

Btw i do not support IK's efforts at toppling the govt. That is exactly what we didn't need.

Well said bro.

Very well stated.

IK needs to stay in parliament, be the REAL opposition that we have missed so much.

And use this time to develop KPK as a model province (within the context of war on TTP, and other issues).

Then in the next elections, people will vote him in.

This will allow IK to learn from mistakes in KPK governance, and MOST importantly prepare a proper team.

Imran's current team is full of lotas like this Qurenshi guy, and I'd much rather have current KPK CM as the next PM or at least a very high level minister in Islamabad.

So thank you for sharing your views.
