The Battle of Hastings was extremely important for the history of England. Duke William's invasion was one of the most daring gambles in history and it ended the rule of the Anglo-Saxons that had lasted for over 600 years since the Roman times. The story of what happened was recorded in the Bayeux Tapestry.

The remarkable thing is the defeat of the English by Norman laid the foundation of modern Britain. Most of the aristocratic elite of Britain are of Norman origin. In more ways then one this event was the making of modern Britain. From the Doomsday book to Magna Carta all followed thanks the Normans.

I think once can still see class divisions among Norman and Anglo Saxon surnames...I guess Briton/Celtic surnames are at the bottom of the heap
