2011: A fruitful year for China-Pak friendship - People's Daily Online

By Ya Sheng (Guangming Daily)14:54, December 27, 2011 Edited and translated by People's Daily Online

During a visit to Pakistan in December 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Pakistani counterpart jointly announced the year 2011, which marks the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties, as the "China-Pakistan Friendship Year," and said that the two countries would carry out a series of activities to celebrate the friendship year.

2011 is a significant year in the development of China-Pakistan relations. The two countries have carried out more than 80 celebration activities covering politics, foreign trade, military, culture, sports, education, and other areas. With participants from across the two countries and from all walks of life, the activities have produced profound and far-reaching effects.

Frequent high-level contacts between the two countries have led their bilateral relations in the right direction. The two countries' presidents, prime ministers, and foreign ministers exchanged congratulatory messages on May 21, 2011, the exact 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties.

Shortly before the anniversary, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani made an official visit to China, during which he met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and held talks with Wen. Gilani and Jia later attended a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties.

Wang Chen, head of China's State Council Information Office, visited Pakistan in June, and attended a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties together with Gilani.

In August, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari visited China, attended the first China-Eurasia Expo, and met with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang.

In September, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu visited Pakistan.

In November, Wen and Gilani held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 10th Meeting of the Prime Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and reached broad consensus.

The two countries made significant progresses in the cooperation of the economic, trade, energy and other areas. In the first 10 months of 2011, the total trade volume between the two countries was as high as about 8.7 billion yuan, up about 24 percent compared to that of the same period of 2010.

The two countries launched the second-stage negotiation on reducing the tax of the China-Pakistan Free Trade Zone.

The two countries held the first China-Pakistan Entrepreneur Forum and the Industrial. Then Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)'s branch companies in Karachi and Islamabad held their opening ceremonies. The first session of the China-Pakistan Energy Working Group was also held in Beijing.

The cultural exchanges between the two countries further expanded and the civil foundation for the friendship between the two countries has become solider. The commemorative picture album and envelope for the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Pakistan foreign relations were published.

The postal and financial departments of Pakistan also published the commemorative stamps and coins for the 60th anniversary and the China-Pakistan Friendship Year respectively. The Pakistan Confucius Broadcast Class held a cultural celebration ceremony. The 100-People Youth Groups of the two countries visited each other. The China-Pakistan Friendship and Brightness Trip declared by Wen Jiabao and Gilani went very well: the first batch of 500 Pakistani cataract patients received medical operations and will be able to see beautiful sceneries in the spring of 2011.

When Pakistan suffered a severe flood disaster, the Chinese government backed Pakistan up firmly and it proved once again that the sincere friendship between the two countries is unbreakable. China offered emergency relief materials of 30 million yuan to Pakistan in batches and donated more than 3,000 tons of daily supplies to the northern part of Pakistan to help the people living there to tide over the natural disaster.

Standing at a new historic starting point, we believe that China and Pakistan will take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Pakistan relations as an opportunity to further expand their traditional friendship, deepen their practical cooperation, enrich the contents of their strategic partnership and keep promoting the unshakable China-Pakistan strategic partnership to new high levels.
