The BJP on Sunday asserted that it respects all religions and strongly denounces the insult of any religious personality.

New Delhi: The diplomatic outrage over the remarks on Prophet Muhammad by BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal continued even as the government sought to defuse the anger in various countries, asserting that it respects all religions.

Here are the top 10 updates on this big story

  1. At least 15 countries, including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Maldives, Libya and Indonesia have lodged official protests against India over the controversial remarks.
  2. The countries expressed their denunciation and rejection of insults of the Prophet Muhammad and demanded an apology from the government.
  3. At home, the opposition parties stepped up pressure for legal action against the two BJP leaders and accused the party of denting the country's image at the international level.
  4. The foreign ministry said in a statement the offensive tweets and comments "did not, in any way, reflect the views of the government. These are the views of fringe elements".
  5. The BJP has suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Naveen Jindal over the controversial comments. The party on Sunday issued a statement, saying it is "strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion" and "does not promote such people or philosophy".
  6. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the remarks and urged the United Nations to take necessary measures to ensure that the rights of minorities are protected in India.
  7. Qatar, Iran and Kuwait had on Sunday summoned Indian ambassadors to express their strong protest and condemnation of the remarks. The embassies later issued statements, saying the "offensive tweets" by individuals in India "do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the government of India".
  8. The controversial remarks also sparked a trend on social media in various countries calling for a boycott of Indian products.
  9. The comments were made by Nupur Sharma during a TV debate last week in the backdrop of a series of communal incidents across the country. BJP media chief Naveen Jindal posted a tweet about the Prophet, which he later deleted.
  10. Delhi Police have registered a case on a complaint filed by Nupur Sharma in which she has alleged that she is receiving death threats. Ms Sharma earlier posted an apology on Twitter, saying that it was not her intention to hurt anyone's religious sentiments.

well the landy in question said her leader ship is "behind you beta". This was on twitter I think, from yesterday.

LOL. The BJP is one of the many Hindutvadi groups whose common ideology - Hindutvad - has three main enemies : Muslims, Christians and Communists so it is a lie what it says in that statement.

Too many threads on this issue.

Arab countries are all talk and no show. Had they been honest in a unified stand against India, OIC could have achieved a lot more.

I don't understand, why people discuss religion on social media?
That is because religion is something people can choose, unlike shaqal, aqal, nasl, nationality, parents etc, but they don't because it is a great leap and they are afraid to make it. Since they cannot make that leap, they feel compelled to defend it and justify why they are sticking to it. The truth is that almost every one follows a certain religion because they were born into it and not because of a conscious and well thought out decision. Doing one-upmanship in these matters basically amounts to defending your own inertia in critical thinking.

Perhaps, it can go both ways. To me, it would be all the more reason, rather, to not discuss it on social media, particularly, if someone is very sensitive about her/his creed, and the sanctity of the associated personalities.

I haven't been following it too much. Australian media, as usual, is silent on this topic because it is obsequiously pro-India and anti-Muslim.

Back to topic, have Indian celebrities spoken out openly on this issue or have they been scared silent by the Modi regime?

What Muslims had done to India?

And will do in the future...

I think India should fear Muslims more than anything in the world and in the entire history of India.

Unless the history is fake and the prophecy is wrong.

And all 15 nations who condemn India know it as well, very well I think.

How many Muslim countries are there. 40 something and only 15 reacted!

This in no good for quack.
usa will step in soon to calm things down.
